Creative Writing MA Student offering English Language Tuition - Manchester, England - Published Writer, Poet, Editor.

Methodology

My teaching method is practice based. I try to incorporate as much activity as possible in my lessons. I think we learn best by figuring things out for ourselves - so my aim is often to push the student in the direction of their own discovery - to be encouraging and ask the right questions.

For me education is all about switching people on - illuminating a subject as well as grasping its content. I believe that if I can help a student to be interested in the topic at hand, then I’ve done something for them as people as well as for their academic success. I try to do this by incorporating broader ideas from the arts & humanities within my lesson plan. I’m a reliable and well organised worker used to professional practices and working with young people.

Experience

I am a home-tutor based in Manchester with experience teaching English language and literature. I have taught students aged 6 - 16 and have worked for years in a secondary school. I am Creative Editor of aAh! Magazine and I'm currently a studying at the Manchester Writing School for an MFA Creative Writing (Poetry). My work has been published in magazines, anthologies and online journals. I have won the MMU Award for Outstanding Contribution to Arts & Humanities.

Prepared and delivered various creative educational exercises for two children including English Language practice, story writing, reading, drawing, painting, comic-book making, football practice and general care. I also prepared meals for them, took them to and from school and also kept up an ongoing practice of casual education - always asking them questions and explaining what I could about England, the arts, the English language and my own experiences in order to broaden their minds.

Science Technician

Main roles included communicating with students about materials, the preparation of experiments, precise time management, systematising of equipment/materials, extensive communication with teaching staff, ordering of new materials, manual problem solving and various scheduling & record-keeping tasks.

King Edward VII School, Sheffield April – July 2014
Voluntary Teaching Assistant
One-to-one and classroom support for pupils ages 11-16 in helping to develop academic skills to increase both their understanding and their grades. I worked extensively with a few students with behavioural problems helping them to focus on the task at hand and apply the understanding they had shown in person to their written work. I had particularly good rapport with some very shy students in whom I tried to encourage delicately and also with what I considered the naughty table - a group of students that were all very behind in whom I noticed as I complimented the work of one, the others seemed to be a little jealous. So I began to compare their work explaining that it was simply that more effort had gone into the better work. The teacher I worked with later told me I had bumped up several grades from Ds to Bs.
