I am currently in my second year studying philosophy. I did religious studies both at GCSE gaining an A and at A level gaining an A*. I am looking to become a teacher once I graduate

Methodology

My teaching methodology is first teach the basic and outline and then to build up. Asking different opinions and how they can relate to the topic being discussed. Then to ask what do you think. Are they good or bad opinions and how can they be critiqued. Really getting students to think for themselves and jumping in when they need help. I create PowerPoints based of the textbook for the specification. While students are in my lessons we talk through the PowerPoint and then notes to be made at home. With summary questions set. The next lesson is an in-depth decision of those set questions

Background

I am a student at the University of Lincoln studying philosophy and loving it. I have a great passion for this subject as find I find it very stimulating and interesting.

Professional profile
A philosophy degree has enabled me to undertake specific study in areas of Philosophy and has allowed me to look in detailed at the views of certain philosophers such as Plato in Ancient Greece all the way through to William Lane Craig in modern times. Within my degree so far we have had a variety of assessments that challenged me and allowed me to build up new skills. One such assessment was creating a group project of the religious views of dominion and stewardship. This assessment allowed me to build teamwork skills as to succeed it was a necessity to collaborate all our different ideas. With this assessment we needed a great deal of planning and organisation which was successfully executed.

Furthermore, within my degree I have also gained specific knowledge of different areas of philosophy such as epistemology and works of Plato for example. While doing specific study in these areas it has allowed me to develop my independent study skills and my ability to research a topic effectively which is becoming a strong skill of mine. While having many assessment due at the time, time management and organisation has become a strong skill of mine having balance ongoing projects with new deadlines and activities which I partake in throughout the academic year.

30/05/2019-11/08/2019-Camp counsellor with the Girls Scouts of Montana and Wyoming

The job of being a camp counsellor was a very rewarding job. The overall goal of the summer was to build girls to become confident and capable young women of society. To help and watch them grow over the summer has been amazing and to be able to have such a positive impact on the women of tomorrow has been an honour. Being a camp counsellor my involvement with the day to day running of the camp was very important. Within this role it was my job to make the running of camp as smooth as possible with transition to each different activity as smooth as possibly.

Key responsibilities
• Waking the children up for the day and making sure they had the correct clothing on for the activities they were going to do. This required time management of knowing how long the girls would need in the morning and how early I should wake them so they would have enough time to dress themselves before breakfast. A skill I successfully managed to perform
• Planning and running activities. This allowed me to bring out my creativeness in planning activities that the girls would find both simulating and fun all while learning a new skill such as candle dipping, leather stamping and string art. This requires me to be a leader for the children and show what a positive role model is. It gives me an opportunity to show what a good leader looks like so they can replicate that in the future. A skill which I successfully managed to learn. Moreover, through planning and running actives it has required me to be a successful collaborator with my colleagues. In addition this allowed me to practice the skill of problem solving as things don’t always necessarily work out the way you think, I am now able to problem solve on the spot and think of solutions which are equally affective as the original idea/activity.
• Being responsible for children health and wellbeing. This was the biggest responsibility while being at camp. Comforting girls who were homesick, learning the girls habits so you can notice quickly if anything changes. Skills that I have successfully acquired here at camp. Furthermore, managing challenging behaviour in a constructive way that would lead to a positive change in the child's behaviour. In addition, making sure they ate a balanced diet while they were camp, making sure they had enough fuel for the day.
• Also, another responsibility of mine was putting children to bed. Making sure they had brushed their teeth and checking in with them to see how they were feeling and how they felt the day had gone. This allowed me to be able to connect with children and more of personal level and create a report with them so they felt safe and secure while at camp. Something I loved doing and did well.

Key achievements
• Some of my key achievements while being a camp counsellor have been to help girls grow in a positive way. Showing them what it looks like to show respect and seeing them replicate it. Moreover in a more specific situation, having a camper who feels so homesick she couldn’t possibly stay the week and then showing her that it’s okay to miss home. However, you should rise to the challenge and grow to be a confident independent girl who does sometimes miss home but at the same time can do amazing things at camp. Another key achievement while at camp is pushing girls to do more than they ever thought they would do. Teaching the skills of leadership, compassion and problem solving.

July 2015 – August 2015 and July 2016- August 2015 Shotley Bridge Infant School

Outline
I undertook this project twice over the summers of 2015 and 2016 and the aim of the project was not only to build my confidence but also to aid the students at the school with their education.
Furthermore, the goal of this was to give me experience in a job which I endeavour to do in the future. Allowing me to see the day to day running of a school and what is needed of a teacher from not only a student perspective.

Key responsibilities
• My responsibilities during my time at Shotley Bridge Infant School ranged from group activities and play with children to one to one reading and writing sessions with children who were struggling in those areas. This allowed me to practice my leadership skills and oral communication with younger children in being able to explain difficult things in a way that they would understand. This also requires me to be creative in coming up with new ways to explain things so they may understand better.
• Undertaking one to one reading and writing sessions with struggling children allowed me to gain many skills in communication, particularly with younger children as the age range I was working with was ages four to seven.
• Participating and in some cases leading small groups of children in classroom based activities such as mathematics workshops also allowed me to develop my leadership skills as I had to take charge of a group of children and in some cases work harder to gain their attention when it came to a particular tasks
.

Key achievements
● Some key achievements while doing this work experience was developing the skill of great oral communication will all different ages from communicating with teachers to the students in the class. While I also developed the skill of interpersonal and leadership skills, I managed to show professionalism and compassion while contributing the growth of each individual in the class.

Awards and recognition
 Grade 8 singing. Awarded by ABRSM– 2018
 Grade 5 violin, Awarded by ABRSM-2016
 Grade 1 piano, Awarded by ABRSM-2014
 Recognition for music, art, science and religious studies for GCSE
 Recognition for hard work in religious studies at A level
 Grade 5 acting, Awarded by LAMDA- 2014

Interests
Aside from academic achievements, I have played for County Durham in rugby at under 18 level. Furthermore, represented the 1st ladies team for the university of Lincoln and Sleaford Ladies RFC. Playing a team sport is invaluable as it has helped me greatly in developing teamwork and communication skills. As when playing you have to communicate with fourteen other people across the field all with different experience. This means you have to be able to choose your language correctly for the person you are talking to. Therefore, allowing me to develop not only basic communication skills but communication skills that takes into account who I am talking to and therefore what language I should use. In addition developing team work and communication also came by the way of participating in many string quartets and orchestras. Furthermore, another interest of mine is acting allowing me to develop my presentation skills both individually and as a team undertaking LAMDA examinations. Further presentation skills have come from my love of music and performing. Having soloed for the University of Lincoln Choir while only in sixth form.
