Dafydd - Hackney Marsh - Music Theory

Methodology

I'm a friendly, experienced and versatile saxophone teacher, and professional jazz musician.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the sax to players of all abilities - from absolute beginner to grade 8 and beyond.
Students can cover a wide range of musical areas - jazz, classical repertoire, improvisation, composition... whatever is inspiring, really. Generally, learners can expect a range of reading music, playing by ear, improvising, playing with piano accompaniment or with backing tracks, developing technical skills and making funny noises.
I teach theory of music in a hands-on, logical manner, and prepare students for theory exams (including grade 5 theory).
I also tutor students studying for GCSE and A-Level Music exams.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

BA (hons) in Music, first class, from York University (2006).
MMus (Master's degree) from the Royal Academy of Music (2008).
LRAM (Licentiate - a teaching qualification) from the Royal Academy of Music (2008).
Grade 8 jazz saxophone (2001)

- How much do you charge?

I offer a FREE consultation lesson, so that prospective pupils can try me out before spending any money.
I recommend adults and older young people have hour-long lessons, at £27 per hour.
30-minute lessons (£14) and 45-minute lessons (£21) are often better for younger students - feel free to get in touch if you're not sure what might be best.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from my dedicated music room in my flat in Hackney, East London, near Hackney Central station (9 mins from Highbury and Islington) and Hackney Downs station (10 mins from Liverpool St station). Sadly, I don't currently have time to travel to students - sorry!

- When are you available?

I'm available across a varied schedule of daytime and evening slots - while many of my pupils have regular weekly lesson times, others (adults in particular) find that they need a more flexible timetable, due to work commitments and the like.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages. Children can generally learn the saxophone from around the age of 9 - it depends on the size of their growing hands! Often the best bet is to hire a saxophone for a month from a music shop to check this out before buying an instrument. There is no upper age limit to learning the saxophone, or any other musical instrument for that matter...

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Many students go on to study for ABRSM jazz or classical grade exams, though this depends on the student. I also put on regular Pupils' Concerts to provide students with a good experience of performing in front of others.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

With a good teacher and some motivation, learning the saxophone is easy*. It's my job to help break up each difficult challenge into lots of small, achievable chunks, and to help students approach these one-by-one. In this way, you need never 'get stuck' - impassable tasks can become five easier ones, and looked at separately. And, hopefully, if I'm doing my job right then students should be inspired by what they're learning, and encourage by their progress. Give it a go! Learning the saxophone is good for you.

* hard work but easy.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

As an instrumental teacher, I currently work in many primary and secondary schools around Hackney, Enfield and Hampstead. This work is both with 1-1 students and with small and large groups. As well as the saxophone I also teach recorder to whole classes of year 3 students in Hackney schools, and currently work for the Hackney Centre for Young Musicians (CYM), where I run the Key Stage 1 choir, and run musicianship classes and ensemble coaching for secondary-age students.

As a professional musician, I perform around London and beyond at jazz venues such as Ronnie Scott's Jazz club, the Vortex, the 606 club and many others, both with my own bands and other people's.

I have, or have previously had, private pupils raging in age from 7 years old to grown-up-with-grandchildren. I regularly put on private 'Student Concerts' at locations such as Hackney's Vortex Jazz Club, where students get the chance to perform (only if they want to!) in front of each other in a relaxed setting.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Over the years I've learnt from some of the world's leading jazz musicians and educators - Iain Ballamy, Julian Arguelles, Pete Churchill, Martin Speake, Tim Berne. I've also taken part in masterclasses with stellar players such as Dave Liebman, Jerry Bergonzi, Mark Turner, Patrick Cornelius and Jason Moran.
