Darren - Greenfield - Support for Students with Autism

Methodology

Hello. My name is Darren Elway and I am a 45 year old English proofreader and tutor with 17 years' teaching experience and 6 years' proofreading experience.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach English from early primary (KS1) right through to and including GCSE. I teach Creative Writing, Adult ESOL and Literacy to most levels (Entry 1 up to and including Level 2). I also work specifically with people who have Dyslexia and SEN (children and adults). I also provide a proofreading service and help with handwriting.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

PGCE
City and Guilds 7306 FAE Teachers Certificate
City and Guilds 9282 / 9284 Teaching ESOL / Literacy
MA in Poetry
BA (Hons) 2.1 in English

- How much do you charge?

I charge £24 an hour for every subject I teach and for any proofreading work I do

- Where do you teach?

I teach in the whole of East Lancashire so Rossendale, Accrington / Hyndburn, Blackburn and Darwen, Burnley, Nelson, Colne, Clitheroe and Pendle etc. Some of West Lancashire so Chorley and Preston. Most of Greater Manchester so Bury, Bolton, Rochdale, Oldham and North Manchester.

- When are you available?

I usually tend to work mainly Monday to Friday from around 3.30pm (when schools finish) until late (about 9.30pm) in the evening. I am also available some of the time earlier in the day and at weekends. I can undertake proofreading work any time as this is done from my home.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach both children and adults at the levels described in my subjects.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

GCSE English and IGCSE English.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Creative Writing and proofreading via email. Please note proofreading work can be done from a memory stick (after I had met the client) if they prefer to have their work proofread that way rather than via email.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I help learners to achieve consistently excellent results and receive very good feedback from learners and parents. Although I am rigorous and thorough in my preparation I have a very flexible, informal and relaxed teaching style which children in particularly respond really well to. I provide all my own teaching / learning materials (e.g. handouts) and an individual learning plan for each learner. The proofreading service I offer is extremely sophisticated, thorough and reliable.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have 17 years' teaching experience in total. 9 years' experience in private (mainly one to one) tuition as well as 6 years' proofreading experience. I have worked with primary and secondary schoolchildren as well as 16-19 year-old students and adults.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I hold an up to date enhanced DBS certificate (February 2017).

- Where and with whom did you train?

I did my PGCE at Bolton Institute, 7306 at Tameside College, 9282 / 84 at Accrington and Rossendale College, MA at Huddersfield University and English degree at Manchester Metropolitan University.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

N / A

Darren was my tutor for over 12 months. During our first meeting he thoroughly assessed my needs in English then prepared his teaching plan tailored to my imperfection which was presented during the second lesson and was executed thereafter.

Darren was always punctual and arrived with a very interesting plan for each lesson. Therefore my time spent working with him was not only profitable but pleasant as well. In addition I have to recommend Darren as a very diligent and trustworthy proofreader.

I was struggling with my dissertation . Darren worked tirelessly to ensure that it ended up with the right content being left and above all that it made sense. I cannot rate him highly enough. Getting hold of Darren was one of the best things I ever did. He was very kind, honest and realistic. He exceeded my expectations and managed to make the situation enjoyable and cost effective. He has a wide variety of skills which allow him to appeal to anyone with their English writing. I recommend him to anyone.
