You can have confidence that my lessons will be friendly, thorough and carefully tailored to the student's needs.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
My main focus is on English / English Literature, Functional Skills and French.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a B.Ed (Hons) degree from Exeter University.
- How much do you charge?
I usually charge between £23 and £25, which includes preparation and marking, although prices may change according to the numbers of students involved. For example, if I were teaching two or more students at the same time, I would reduce the amount charged per person. I add the current fuel mileage rate where the journey is above three miles.
- Where do you teach?
I teach on-line lessons from home, or face-to-face at an agreed study centre (such as a library or council office) or the student's home. I prefer to work within a few miles of Taunton, Somerset.
- When are you available?
I am available at various times during any term week. I do not tend to work after 5:30 pm or during school holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I tend to teach KS3 and 4, ie 11 to 16 years. However, I have taught students younger than 11, English and French up to A-Level, essay-writing at degree level and French and Computer Studies to adults of every age!
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I prepare students largely for GCSE and/or Functional Skills exams, but I am very happy to work with anyone who wants to, for example, improve their general English reading, writing or conversational skills.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I tutor via Fronter and Elluminate, if students have access to those online platforms (as many schools and education centres do). Otherwise, I would use Skype and e-mail.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I would encourage anyone, of any age or ability-level, who feels that they are not doing as well as they could, to be involved in one-to-one tuition. The lessons are differentiated, there are plenty of resources on hand, and the focussed environment helps you not only to work at your own pace, but to see very obvious progress in a short time. Many students are nervous at the idea of showing their weaknesses or lack of skill to a new teacher, but I am friendly, committed and will do my best to help you succeed!
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching since 1974. As my wife and I were living in Jersey at the time, I spent my first eight years teaching English, Art and French at a co-ed 4-16 private school. I then left to pursue a degree in English and Educational Studies at Rolle College in Exmouth. Following my degree I taught for nineteen years at various comprehensive schools. Since 1974 I have also intermittently worked with individuals and small groups at suitable venues and been involved with adult education, teaching French and Computer Studies. I recently retired from teaching at Northfields Education Centre in Taunton, but continue my involvement in the Alternative Provision Centre, with students who have health or behavioural issues. They are taught mainly on-line through the Virtual Classroom, a Somerset County Council service that helps provide education to those students who otherwise may be unable to access it.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I do.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I trained at Rolle College, Exmouth, accredited by Exeter University.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I belong to a teaching union, ATL.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
As I am now largely working as a teacher on the Virtual Classroom (VC), I tend to deal with those students who are unable to attend school for medical reasons, or who have been permanently excluded by their school. One girl has been away from school for over a year owing to chronic anxiety, which has led to other issues. After a difficult initial GCSE year, she is now determined to gain GCSEs in English and French. Her presence on-line has allowed this student to learn in the 'classroom' and complete work at home. I can then collect her work via an on-line folder, annotate it and discuss it during the next lesson.
