I tutor with the School Direct secondary teachers’ training programme, lecture on a number of the primary education teacher training programmes and provide school consultancy services through the University of Chichester, Institute of Education. In addition, I offer personal tuition, continued professional development training for teachers and I write teaching resources for publication. I am an associate with Creative Education, a supplier of CPD to schools, and I have been engaged by the Royal Geographical Society and the University of Chichester to lead some of their CPD events. My specific interests are fieldwork, lesson planning and the use of data to inform teaching and learning. Durham University School of Education 2012-2013
I worked as a tutor on the Secondary Geography PGCE programme. I led subject tutorials addressing a range of pedagogic and subject specific topics, observed the students teaching and I was part of the assessment team. I helped to prepare the School of Education for an Ofsted inspection for which we were awarded an ‘outstanding’ grade. This role at Durham proved to be hugely enjoyable as it challenged me to think more carefully about current educational matters and I used the opportunities to reflect upon my own teaching skills to good effect. I also mentored twenty-four undergraduate students in Grey College Durham, providing pastoral support if needed. We decided to move south as the Durham PGCE work was part-time and the needs of our elderly parents had become more acute.
Pangbourne College 1991 - 2012
Geography teacher: KS3, GCSE, A Level and IB.
Through my teaching of geography at Pangbourne with the help of a number of INSET courses and personal research, I developed a teaching style that was varied and differentiated to meet the needs of the mixed ability sets I always taught. In addition, I enjoyed developing a range of imaginative teaching resources. I held the post of Head of Department between 1996 and 2007. During this time, I saw an improvement in the geography public examination results as we strived to become more professional in our approach to teaching. To this end, I introduced fieldwork opportunities for all year groups, used value added data to analyse our results and set targets, and I established a culture of regular lesson observation and honest feedback. I also supervised the successful introduction of A Level 2000 and a new GCSE specification. In addition, some A-Level examining enriched my A-Level teaching, and I was able to pass on what I learnt to the department. Since relinquishing the role of Head of Department I undertook training for teaching the International Baccalaureate Diploma and for delivering controlled assessment coursework for GCSE.

As the Head of the Humanities Faculty I promoted cross-curricular work in the classroom and encouraged the sharing of good practice across the humanities subjects.
Tutoring (1992 -2007)
I have experience of tutoring sixth form students and tutoring in two boys’ boarding houses. I brought to both roles a high level of support for the students and good communication with academic departments and parents. I also met a number of university admissions tutors through this period which helped me to fine-tune references and students’ personal statements. I hugely enjoyed both my tutoring roles and I believe I had a good influence on the lives of a number of young people.
Housemaster (2007 - 2012).
I was appointed housemaster of a boys’ house in 2007, which gave me a responsibility for sixty boarders and dayboys between the ages of thirteen and eighteen. During my tenure I turned around a house that had a poor reputation and more than its fair share of problem pupils. I worked closely with the Headmaster and my house team to institute some significant changes, one of which was to bring about a more equitable admissions programme to the houses which increased the number of College Scholars in my house from one in my first year to eight in my final year. I also petitioned successfully for a number of significant improvements to the fabric of my house. Above all, I insisted upon a more professional approach from my house team and instilled higher standards of conduct and academic work from the boys. I take some satisfaction from the fact that I handed on a strong and happy house to my successor.

INTERESTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
I try to balance my professional commitments with a healthy family life and also make time to pursue my own interests. I keep fit through rowing and gym work and these are also excellent ways to unwind. As a geographer, I have long been keen on travel, which also happens to be one of my favourite topics for my leisure time reading.
I took to the sport of rowing at school and since then it has always played a part in my life. My achievements include winning two events at Henley Royal Regatta, coaching a Henley winning crew and rowing at international level. I have been able to bring my own experiences as an athlete and my enthusiasm for the sport into my own coaching.
