I'm as passionate about teaching music as I am about playing and composing it. I hope to share that passion with you! If you have the desire to learn and the commitment to consistent practice, I am confident we'll forge a fruitful partnership.
My lessons take place in a relaxed and friendly environment in my home in South Bradford. My lesson structure and teaching method varies depending on your level and aspirations, and evolves as you acquire more skill. That said, it is my aim to enable every student to play with physical and expressive freedom. I place emphasis on learning to play with natural and tension free movement, and I believe that to be at its best, musical expression - that magical element of any great performance - requires a strong technical and theoretical foundation.
In addition to running an over-subscribed music teaching studio I am a professional composer, cellist and writer. Since completing my music degree in 2000 I have worked with orchestras, recording artists, bands and ensembles, and have made an international name for myself as a remote session cellist. I work with media composers across Europe and the USA.
Teaching has been an ever-present part of my music career. I have 100% pass rate for ABRSM grade 1 to 8 cello and theory exam entries, with most achieving merit or distinction. 3 former students have gone on to pursue music as a full time career, and many have been accepted into prestigious youth orchestras including Leeds Youth Symphony Orchestra, North Yorkshire County Youth Orchestra, the National Children's Orchestra, and the National Youth Orchestra.
I have contributed articles on teaching and playing to Strings Magazine (String Letter Publishing, USA) and Music Teacher Magazine (Rhinegold Publishing, UK). I have also written a method for adults returning to the cello called Restart Cello (published by Music Sales Limited in 2012).
I obtained my music qualifications (PLM and B Mus (Hons) at Stellenbosch University and the South African College of Music. I have been resident in the UK since 2000, where I have established myself as a session cellist and teacher.
I teach cello from beginner to advanced level, and music theory up to grade 8. My students have a 100% ABRSM grade 1 to 8 pass rate (predominantly merit and distinction) in both cello and music theory.
My teaching method centres around helping my students to develop tension and pain free technique through a better understanding of posture, balance and freedom of movement. I believe in building a strong technical foundation to facilitate authentic musical expression.
I like to ensure that all of my students have a good balance of technical material and repertoire in their practice routine, and I am open to exploring non-traditional repertoire including improvisation with those who are less interested in studying classical repertoire.
Amazing teacher. Taught both my daughters with a great rapport.
I started playing cello at 55 and Deryn was my first teacher. She was really positive and encouraging and patient when I got frustrated with myself in those early stages.
Her teaching was very clear, well thought out and conscientious - she often went that extra mile to help and be supportive between lessons. She is also very good at adaping to individual needs and learning styles as well as making learning fun and interesting.
After two years I was really sad to move to a new teacher as Deryn moved house a bit too far away for regular lessons but I wholeheartedly recommend her.
Very fortunate indeed are those who find themselves under the tutelage of Deryn Cullen. She is, aside from being a master of the instrument, possessed of a tremendous depth of insight into the sources of the music, and an uncanny intuition for its inspiration. Having engaged the services of Deryn Cullen to interpret and perform the most difficult and sensitive passages for what has been widely acknowledged as my most important works, I can say without hesitation that she would be a Superprof of the finest calibre.
Deryn is one if the most patient music teachers I have ever had. She was my very first music teacher when I was in grade school. She instilled in me a love of piano that lasts till this day. I will forever be grateful for the time she spent teaching me. I would highly recommend her to anyone.
If you had told me that in just a few years, I would be able to play the cello well enough to perform in an orchestra, I'd say you were fibbing. Yet here I am, still motivated and learning new things - having started on the instrument from scratch just 6 years ago as an adult learner.
Deryn is a fantastic, patient and inspiring tutor. She is immensely knowledgeable and uncompromising ~ her holistic approach makes learning fun and intuitive. Highly recommended!
Deryn has provided beautiful cello parts for a number of songs I have worked on with her (examples accessible from altokey.com). She's a fantastic cellist, super friendly and a lovely person in general. I can't recommend her enough.
Takes the time to help you hear what’s important in the music...not just the music from the instrument ..
I have been taught by Deryn for 10 years. She is an outstanding teacher - highly intelligent, patient, considerate, always looking for new ways to communicate her very considerable knowledge and experience. She is utterly trustworthy and I recommend her without reservation.
