- Do you have a personal message for students?
I believe that education should be a fun and fulfilling experience rather than one that is dull or too highly-pressurised. I've found that students respond well when they are engaged with the subject and encouraged to discuss any difficulties openly with me. I use creative tasks and individualised exercises to really bring out the best in even the most reluctant students. I aim to create a comfortable learning environment for students, focusing on student engagement with and enjoyment of the subject in order to ensure long-term success as well as the fulfilment of short-term targets.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been a tutor for fouryears, and have taught students of all academic abilities between the ages of 6 and 18 in both English (Language and Literature) and History.
I have also had significant experience as a teaching assistant, with one-on-one contact, with students at an East London Academy, supporting Key Stage 3 and GCSE students for their English Literature GCSE controlled assessments and examinations.
As a teaching assistant and as a private tutor, I have worked one-on-one with students of various abilities, providing support not only for students with academic difficulties, but also for students already performing at a high level who wished to fulfil their potential that was not being addressed in the classroom environment. Whether they are in Key Stage 1 or at A Level, I always encourage confidence, maturity and ground all work in the appreciation and enjoyment of reading and writing. I support students in their reading and extended writing in preparation for essays, controlled assessments and examination. I currently specialise in teaching students with ADHD, behavioural issues and auditory processing issues. I have worked extensively with students with dyslexia and particular difficulties with written and verbal communcation.
My creative background (I am a published writer and playwright) allows me to bring a unique approach to lessons when helping students with their work, particularly in English essay writing- engaging students' critical faculties and creative imaginations to ensure their written work is not only intellectually sound, mature and precise but also thoughtful, passionate and interesting to read - a key quality that examiners always look for when awarding the highest grades, but can be difficult to cultivate in an ordinary classroom environment.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Yes, I currently hold a valid DBS Certificate.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
A cross-section of my current students show the range of abilities and ages I work with - I tutor three students between the ages of 6 and 8 in spelling, reading comprehension and writing, using fun and creative techniques to help them learn. I currently tutor a high ability Year 9 student, specialising in reading comprehension and essay technique in preparation for GCSE - he has progressed to top set English . I also tutor several year 10 and 11 English Literature GCSE students. supporting their English GCSE exam preparation and creative writing. I tutor another year 9 student with English as a second language, preparing them for the relevant IGCSE qualification, focusing on spelling, grammar, creative and essay writing. Please contact me for further details on my SEN students.
At all levels of ability, I have found that one-one-one support has already resulted in increased confidence, a higher level of engagement and sustained progress in both writing and reading. Part of my method is that I am keen to tailor lessons to a student's needs - if they have an exceptionally high reading level, I will offer recommendations for books which are suitable, rather than allowing them to be frustrated by standard set texts, and I will set challenging essay questions that may be beyond their classroom work, but that I feel will challenge them positively - this always has a dramatically positive affect on confidence, ability and motivation.
