I’m a 20 year old student in my third year, studying History and History of Art at the University of Edinburgh. I’m willing to teach school pupils a range of topics relating to history, art and poetry at any level up to Advanced Higher (or equivalent).
The teaching methods I use are always tailored to the student. Typically, in a one-to-one session, I will ask the student to produce a short essay on a certain subject, which I can give feedback on and which we will discuss in detail. This will later form the basis of a wider discussion of the topic. However, I’m more than willing to discuss topics within a small group, and can present or lecture on certain topics if it is information other than advice which is needed. Just let me know which you think you’d benefit from most!
While I pride myself on being well-read and flexible, it should be noted that my interest lies mainly in more modern history, art and poetry: for instance, I regularly give lessons on events from 1900-1950, on art movements of the nineteenth and twentieth century’s (as well as on very many individual figures), and on poetical analysis of twentieth century works. While I’m more than willing to teach many other topics, it will be necessary for the student to give me sufficient notice. Rates may also differ slightly on certain topics. If you’d like to know more about my areas of expertise, or have any more general questions, just ask!
While I have taught many students over the past few years, I’m a student myself and have experienced a wide range of teaching styles throughout secondary and higher education. My interest in and knowledge of the subjects I teach, coupled with an awareness of what I feel are the most successful teaching strategies for academic development as well as exam success and entry into university level study, make my lessons especially helpful for younger students. My ongoing experience of learning information, writing essays and sitting exams, both in a school and a university environment, make me a tutor who is aware of the needs and priorities of other students.
Students should always let me know the topics they wish to study in advance so that I may prepare. I'm happy to teach a range of topics, but may need to do some research into them myself beforehand in order to give the fullest lesson I can give. As a result, rates may differ slightly on certain topics, but not by much.
