Edward - Golders Green - Saxophone

Methodology

Music is great fun - once you learn the language, you will be able to communicate with people all over the world without even speaking to them!

Saxophones/clarinets & pianos are tools for us to amplify what either goes on inside our head or inside the head of a composer when he wrote notes on a page for us to play. My lessons will focus on fostering a perfect instrumental technique and immaculate time so that the student can flourish into a musician able to communicate their ideas fluently to an audience in the months and years to come.

Whether you are a complete beginner, an intermediate or an advanced student, I will be able to help point you in the right direction. But remember, you learn the instrument with regular practice. I just set the practice framework!

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach 3 instruments: clarinet, saxophone (all 4 variations: alto, tenor, soprano and baritone) and piano. I teach both absolute beginners (whether they want to be taken through graded exams or not) and advanced students who wish to hone their classical techniques or who want to learn how to play jazz and improvise.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have Performing Diplomas awarded by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) for the clarinet and piano (as well as ABRSM Grade 8 distinction on both) and Grade 8 (with distinction) on the saxophone.

- How much do you charge?

I charge 30.00 per hour.

- Where do you teach?

I prefer to teach from my home in NW2 but will consider teaching at various other locations. The 30.00 per hour charge is my charge from home.

- When are you available?

I am available all week, evenings or daytime! I prefer not to teach at weekends but will do it if there is your weekly schedule is tight.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach from the age of 7 to 60+ and I teach absolute beginners and advanced students.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Time is absolutely crucial. You can know all the notes, have perfect tuning and dexterity but it all counts for nothing if you cannot play in time! As they say, you must spend time on your time! From lesson one I always break rhythms down and get students clapping the beat so that we know we are playing perfectly in time. Music is no fun if you just play on your own but that is all you will be able to do unless you can play in time. It is hard work but very rewarding once you can do it - and it means you can play in bands, orchestras, with CD backing tracks or piano accompaniments etc.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have spent the last 3 years performing and teaching with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2009-10 I was the lead alto sax player (the leader of the saxophone section) and we performed in Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in January 2010 before I left the band (as I am now 25, which is its upper age limit). This experience has allowed me to perform, practise and play with some of Britain's finest young musicians. We also toured the country doing workshops in schools, teaching children to use their ears, to improvise and to understand jazz rhythms.

As well as teaching privately from home, I teach in a school in Surrey where I have ten clarinet and saxophone students. I am also a registered teacher for Waltham Forest Music Services where I am regularly asked to teach the clarinet to a classroom, rather than one-on-one tuition.

In 2001, I was the principal alto saxophonist with the National Youth Orchestra and whilst at the University of Nottingham, I was the Musical Director of University of Nottingham Jazz Band (2005).

I regularly perform as a soloist, live, on BBC Radio Leicester and have performed in the following venues:

Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club
Wakefield Jazz Club
House of Commons (including organising a ten-piece jazz band for John Prescott's leaving party)
Royal Festival Hall
The Stables (Wavendon) with Sir John Dankworth

I was also the solo pianist on Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue in 2003. I performed the great work in theatres around the UK as solo pianist (and also did the clarinet intro!) with The Ransome Brass Band.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I am fully CRB checked and cleared and can provide a certificate if necessary.
