Greetings! My name is Elaine Chen. I was born in America and grew up in Taiwan. I am a third year undergraduate music student from the Royal College of Music, my major instrument is the viola, and I also teach the piano. I love teaching.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
My major instrument is viola, but I teach piano as well. If anyone is interested in learning the Chinese string instrument - er hu - I would love to teach as well.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have passed ABRSM examinations in performance level viola and grade 8 piano. I have also passed grade 7 er hu.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £25 per hr for both viola and piano, and if possible I like to teach at my own home, but if students or parents prefer me to teach at their house, I only charge extra travel expenses.
For teaching Chinese, I charge £20 per hr
- Where do you teach?
I personally prefer to teach in my own house, because it is more comfortable for me.
However, I can also teach in a student's house if their parents can't bring their children here to have a lesson.
- When are you available?
This year before summer, any time except for Monday is fine, but I also have lessons and orchestra to attend, so apart from that, I am free.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
For viola I love to teach anyone at any age, and for piano, I love to teach children between 2 - 12, and for Chinese, anyone who needs basic conversation or more.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Feel free to ask me any questions about anything during the lessons.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I joined an orchestra aged 9, I've given quartet performances in all sorts of events, and have given a solo viola performance in concerts with the New Shanghai orchestra. I have been teaching since I went to college, taught kids from 3 - 16 years old for viola, piano and music theory, 2 adult students as well.
In college I have been playing in the orchestras such as philharmonic, symphony orchestra, etc, and performing with my quartet in the hospital to cheer up patients.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
- Where and with whom did you train?
I am learning the viola at the Royal College of Music with Susie Mazero
