Eleanor - Brislington - Saxophone

Methodology

I am an enthusiastic and friendly teacher based in the South Bristol area. I aim to provide a fun and positive environment for learning no matter what your ambitions in music are. All ages and standards of pupils are welcome.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I am a woodwind teacher and musician with knowledge of flute, piccolo, clarinet and saxophone. I am a flute specialist with DipABRSM qualifications in both teaching and performing. I teach flute at all levels, can offer piccolo coaching if required and I also offer fife lessons for children too small for the flute. I also teach clarinet and alto saxophone up to grade 5 and can offer music theory lessons for beginner to intermediate learners.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I recieved a 2:1 BMus degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama where I advanced my performance and teaching skills through interaction with top professionals. I spent much time learning about teaching with my flute tutor there and I have included a reference from him in my media section. I have a DipABRSM in Instrumental Teaching (flute) and DipABRSM in Music Performance (flute) from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music as well as A level music (grade A), ABRSM grade 5 theory and LCM grade 5 piano.

- How much do you charge?

My fees for lessons at my home studio are £28 for an hour lesson, £21 for 45 minutes or £14 for half an hour.
My fees for lessons in your home are £30 for an hour lesson, £22.50 for 45 minutes or £18 for half an hour.
My fees at Nailsea music shop are £17 per half hour slot.

- Where do you teach?

I mainly teach from my home studio in Brislington, Bristol.

I also teach in Nailsea Music Shop on Tuesday and Thursday evenings if you are in this area.

- When are you available?

I currently have availability for weekday daytime and evening lessons in my home studio. Please mention any specific availability you have when you contact and I will do my best to find a mutually suitable lesson time. I am often available to teach during the school holidays if that is required.

Lessons in Nailsea Music Shop are currently only available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon/evenings.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

All ages of student are welcome, I have had experience with a wide age range of both child and adult students. I teach flute from beginner to post grade 8 and clarinet and saxophone from beginner to grade 5. Fife and recorder lessons are available for younger students. Returning musicians who learnt in the past and would like a teacher to help them reconnect with the instrument are also very welcome. If you're looking for a teacher to help with learning music theory I offer lessons up to Grade 5.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Students are under no obligation to take exams but do have the option to work towards graded music exams if desired. I prepare my students for ABRSM exams in most cases but can work with a student for Trinity exams as preferred. I can also help to prepare students for school performance exams and auditions. I have a 100% pass rate across all exams taken under my tuition.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

If you're interested in enjoying music performance at any level whether for personal fun, graded exams or even working towards a career in music get in touch. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. It's never too late to start learning and enjoying music!

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have experience teaching students privately from beginner through to university level, ages ranging from 6 to 74. I have also worked as a whole class instrumental teacher with Somerset Music, teaching woodwind instruments to primary school children in a classroom environment. I have also previously spent time coaching small ensembles and sectionals for large ensembles. I have a 100% pass rate for students who have taken exams under my tuition.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have a full and up to date DBS certificate.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I studied flute with Roger Armstrong and clarinet and saxophone with John Cooper. I have previously studied flute with Nicola Russell, Caroline Hobbs-Smith, clarinet with Laura Porter and have studied piccolo with Barbara Brown. I have also taken part in masterclasses with many top professional flute players such as Matthew Featherstone (Principal flute of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales) and Ken Smith (formerly Principal flute of the Philharmonia Orchestra).

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a full member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) and a registered private teacher with this organisation.

I can't recommend Eleanor highly enough. She tutored my son for some extra flute lessons over the summer holidays. She was wonderful: enthusiastic, lively and personable, but also an excellent technical teacher who very quickly identified areas for improvement and taught him new techniques in a fun and approachable manner. My son looked forward greatly to the sessions and the improvement in his playing after just one was more than apparent.

I had been playing the flute (self taught) for a number of years but my progress had been slow. Eleanor soon discovered the bad habits I had developed and patiently set about correcting them.... Eleanor makes her lessons interesting, informative, fun and creative. For me Eleanor helped improve all aspects of my playing ability but above all she gave me the confidence to play the instrument properly. Thoroughly recommend her.

She made the lessons interesting and fun and yet still retained structure in her tuition.'
Her communication skills are excellent which she supports with practical demonstrations.'
I have no hesitation in recommending Eleanor in her capacity as a music teacher as she is a very capable and professional tutor.

Not only does Eleanor have an in-depth knowledge of music, she is able to adapt her lessons to the individual needs of the student. She is very patient and enabled me to practice things in multiple different ways, to ensure I had a good grasp of difficult concepts.
