I can teach music theory and music reading but I prefer to get students playing tunes as quickly and easily as possible using a simple method called "tab" where the fret number of the note is written on a diagram showing the 6 strings. It can be learned in one session. All the tabs I write have proper music notation above to show note lengths and rests. I will happily teach students to read music as well if they want to learn.
I teach scale patterns but I don't teach boring scales, I teach the students to use the scales to make music as soon as possible.
I teach the fundamentals of rock and pop music from day one. Students start learning 12 bars blues in their very first lesson!
I played lead guitar in an all-female rock band for more than a decade and I now run my own 18-piece big band. I teach guitar and also work as a lecturer in the School of Music and Fine Art at the University of Kent.
I am a qualified teacher (PGCE and PGCHE) with a first class honours degree in music technology.
Group lessons are £15 an hour. If you are the first student in a group, I offer a private 30 minute lesson for the same price. When another student enrols, I offer a duo lesson for 45 minutes for the same price. When there are 3 or more students, the lesson is a full hour which includes 5 minutes setting up at the start and 5 minutes packing away at the end. This is because a full hour of one to one tuition is too intense for a child whereas group lessons include games and group activities. During the first term, lessons can be paid weekly on arrival. Thereafter, the need to be paid per term in advance by bank transfer or PayPal.
