Music technology is a very nuanced area, students often have a wide range of goals and skill levels in different areas. I try to find a balance between the most useful techniques and the most engaging practices for each student, to keep you engaged and enthusiastic.
For students looking for production and composition tuition, we will normally look at tracks you're working on, we'll use them as a basis for conversations about how to use plug-ins, how to structure a composition, how to prioritise elements in a mix, and how to begin mastering your tracks, among any other topics you might be interested in.
We can also spend time learning about how synthesizers and samplers work, as well as how they can best serve your music and which particular pieces of software or hardware are best suited to your needs.
For students interested in mixing and mastering, we can go over all elements in your tracks, fine-tuning them while discussing the reasoning behind all of the decisions we make, as well as what other directions each sound could go.
We would also look at the track in its totality, pick out the elements that need to be prioritised and give them the space they need. We can also talk about the ways you can process a whole mix to get it sounding as big or as delicate as you want.
For students that are looking for lessons in something not explicitly outlined above, we can work out a syllabus that best suits you. That could include learning about anything related to digital, analog, or acoustic audio and music. I'm always happy to try something outside the box so just get in touch and we can work out the best way to tackle it.
Sam is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!
I am a producer and performer of electronic music, examples of my work can be found by googling "Sam Hostettler NX12X"
I am currently part-way through a Masters course at Goldsmiths, where I previously received a First Class undergraduate degree in Popular Music:
For me, this focused on electronic/experimental/dance music, in terms of technical skills, compositional and performance techniques as well as critical analysis in the form of essays and presentations.
I received an A* for Music Technology at A Level with full marks at A2. (2012)
I have all the knowledge and skills necessary for A Level and BTEC Music Technology and beyond.
I am also happy to teach students who are not preparing for a qualification and just wish to learn about writing and recording music with computers and other music technology.
I have been using music technology for the last 15 years and am very proficient in the most recent versions of Logic Pro and Ableton Live, I also have some knowledge of Pro Tools, Cubase and Reason.
I have excellent knowledge of synthesisers and all manner of synthesis techniques as well as audio recording and processing techniques.
Perfect! Awesome lesson from Sam helping me with recording issues I was experiencing. Will surely book another session.
Perfect! Excellent teacher!
Perfect! Sam is en excellent teacher and very happy to share his amazing production skills you. He's able to explain complicated things like synthesis and routing in a very simple and easy understandable way. Really happy about what I learned so far.
Franziska is a pleasure to teach, she is punctual, enthusiastic and engaged.
Excellent! Very knowledgeable in synthesis, creates all his elements from scratch and able to reproduce sounds using stock plugins. Sam's finished article sounds excellently mixed and his insight has been very beneficial in helping me explore several techniques I might have previously glossed over. Would happily recommend anyone to give Sam a lesson or two to see how he might benefit you
Eman is an engaged student, he has a clear idea of what he wants to learn.
Sometimes a little hard to pin down in terms of times/dates
Overall a pleasure to teach.
After being stuck with my tracks for a long time, Sam has helped me with them and we're making great progress now. He's good at explaining things and has excellent knowledge. Highly recommended.
Sam taught Music Technology to my daughter this year in her final year of A levels. Not only was he passionate about the subject but he was able to impart his knowledge and enthusiasm to the point where my daughter started to enjoy her lessons. As a result her grades and confidence improved and I have no doubt she will pass. Sam always turned up on time and yet if we needed to change the lesson, was also very flexible. Thank you Sam.
I was Sam's Lecturer across multiple modules for his Undergraduate studies in Popular Music at Goldsmiths, University of London. Across the three years of Sam's degree, I found him to be a very able student both academically and in his creative practice work, and was unsurprised at the end of his time with us to see that he achieved an excellent final degree result.
As a learner, Sam was independent, thoughtful, patient, self-motivated and very committed, and I have no doubt that these characteristics would serve him similarly well as a tutor. During his time at Goldsmiths he also showed himself to be responsible and caring for his fellow students, with an excellent work ethic and a clear sense of priorities.
I have been Sam's university instrumental tutor for live electronic music performance since 2015 during which time he has developed his craft as a producer and live electronics performer to great effect. Sam's progress as a musician is evident in his composition and professional level of technical ability which is showcased in his creative blend of software programming, hardware control and synced modular synthesis, all elements combining to what is now a distinctively individual musical identity. Sam could offer a great deal to a student who is looking to begin exploring the areas of music technology outlined above.
Sam is totally trustworthy. He is a calm and considerate teacher, who knows how to motivate the learner. He can identify the next step a learner needs to take and present that in a manageable way allowing the learner to keep moving forward and feel proud of their achievements.
Sam is a friendly, welcoming individual with a great knowledge of music and music technology, I think he would make an excellent tutor.
