I am an experienced classics teacher. I hugely enjoy engaging with students at all ages and levels, helping them improve and sometimes outperform their expectations.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Latin, Ancient Greek, New Testament Greek and Classical Civilisation.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have an MA in Classics from Oxford University
- How much do you charge?
I charge £35 per hour for A level Latin and Greek and £30 per hour for GCSE and £40 per hour for A level Classical Civilisation. I offer an initial free 30 minute consultation with no commitment. There is a 10% discount for prepaid bookings of 5 sessions or more.
- Where do you teach?
I teach at home and online.
- When are you available?
I am available weekdays and weekends, daytime and evening.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I teach GCSE, IGCSE, A level and IB to school and university students and mature learners.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I use Skype. Where appropriate I provide notes, power points, or worksheets prior to the session and I use shared online resources such as the Perseus Digital Library and the online Cambridge Latin Course. I give feedback on typed emailed work, and often provide notes after the session. Where appropriate I keep parents regularly informed of progress.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I aim to build confidence with lots of friendly encouragement. I teach essay writing skills, how to improve translation work, grammar tips and text analysis and I help with focused exam preparation. I am able to teach the new OCR GCSE and A level specifications
I tutor as flexibly as possible. I can offer a single session for revising a particular topic, or to advise on an essay, or ongoing support where a module needs retaking, or where help is needed with grammar and translation. I can also teach an entire course and I am happy to teach Latin or Greek to beginners. Tutoring can be weekly, or more or less frequently. I offer sessions of one to two hours, plus a free, no commitment, 30 minute initial discussion, and a discount for block bookings.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught for over 20 years in schools in Kent and following retirement I have recently begun tutoring online. I have an excellent record of students achieving A and A* at GCSE and A level.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have a current DBS certificate.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Most of my current students are preparing for Latin, Greek, and Classical Civilisation A Level. They need focused language, text, topic and literary analysis revision and essay practice. I teach younger students working towards Latin GCSE and I also teach Greek and Latin to mature learners who have no previous experience.
Milly is really making progress and beginning to feel happier.
