Emma - Central Bristol - Composition

Methodology

I teach Suzuki cello to all ages.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach the cello and composition.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I am a qualified Level 4 Suzuki Teacher, accredited by the British Suzuki Institute.

I also have an MA in Composition for Film and TV from the University of Bristol, and an MA in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Cambridge.

- How much do you charge?

For cello, I charge £42/hr, £35/45 mins, £21/30 mins.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from my home in central Bristol, near the Hippodrome.

- When are you available?

Current availability is flexible.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach children from 3 years old to adults.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Whilst I don't use grades in the early stages, older children can be entered for later ABRSM or Trinity Guildhall grades. My students have all achieved either distinctions or merits.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I believe that every child can develop talent - music is a language that can be learnt by everyone!

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching for 8 years and previously taught the cello from 2009-2016 at Southbank International School in Hampstead. I have been teaching privately since 2009, both individual and group lessons, and have also taught for many years at Bryanston International Summer School, Temple Dinsley Summer School, Sforzando Summer Course and Suzuki Hub Halloween Course. As well as cello, I also teach improvisation groups and conduct children's orchestras and ensembles.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have an enhanced DBS certificate.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I was brought up in the Suzuki Method, and learnt with Christine Livingstone as a child and teenager. My final dissertation at university was titled 'Children are Seedlings: Personhood and Learning in the Suzuki Method of Teaching. I studied cello pedagogy under Annette Costanzi, Penny Heath and Tessa Oakley.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

British Suzuki Institute
Bristol Suzuki Group
London Suzuki Group
The Musicians' Union

- Tell me about some of your current students.

One of my first students was accepted into Junior Guildhall as a teenager. Many of my students have gained music scholarships to senior school, the most recent of which won the music scholarship to St Paul's Girls School in London.
