Super Prof

About the lesson
I'm a very experienced and approachable tutor with huge passion for my subjects. I have a Literature BA from Cambridge and an MA in Creative Writing. I love working with students, whether for Primary, GCSE, A Level or University.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
My background is in English literature and writing. I studied English Literature through to Bachelors degree level at Cambridge and then took a Masters in Scriptwriting (involving storytelling, creative writing etc) and I'm a writer myself, so I primarily focus on English. I'm familiar with the 11+ requirements and GCSE and A Level syllabus. I also teach essay writing, as I know this can be an area where students can lack confidence at any age and in any subject. For younger students, particularly those preparing for the 11+, I also teach Maths.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA in English Literature from Cambridge University (upper second class, 2:1) and a Masters with Distinction in Scriptwriting (for Film). I studied Maths and Art to A Level.
- How much do you charge?
I generally charge £45 per hour.
- Where do you teach?
I'm generally based around Crouch End , Finsbury Park, Archway and Muswell Hill. Usually, I come to your home, but in some circumstances, if easier, I teach in a cafe or public library.
- When are you available?
I am very flexible and can tutor any time on weekdays and during school holidays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
For English, I teach all ages from Key Stage 2 through to university and adult education. The best thing to do is get in touch with me and we can have a chat about your individual needs.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
11+
GCSE English
AS and A Level English
Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees in any subject where essay writing is required
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I am very easy-going and approachable, and in my tutoring sessions, no question is wrong or stupid. I aim to help you play to your strengths and hopefully help you find the fun and interest in your work.

I cannot recommend Emma highly enough. My daughter's grades and confidence in English Literature and Language were deteriorating. From the first lesson my daughter felt her understanding improve. She gained confidence and began to enjoy English. She went on to achieve A grades in both English Literature and English Language. Emma's brilliantly skilled and hugely encouraging teaching had a great impact not only on my daughter's GCSE grades but on her confidence and engagement with this wonderful subject.
Our kids (ages 9 and 7) have been learning art from Emma for the last 3 months. We are pleased to say that, during this time, their drawing skills have improved markedly. Emma has given them a good sense of light and perspective which they have been able to translate in various portraits and still-life drawings. Emma is furthermore very enthusiastic and the kids are always keen to spend time with her and to learn from her. We cannot recommend her strongly enough.
Emma has been helping my son in Year 4 with his Maths and English which has really made a difference to his self confidence, ability and enjoyment at school. She is a really warm, engaging person and he looks forward to her lessons; she tailors her teaching to his interests to keep him motivated and I would definitely recommend her as a tutor.
I've learned so much working with Emma! Her coaching has greatly increased my confidence and writing skills, and prepared me for my first university exams.
Working online via email was great. Emma was always willing to work with my schedule and needs. I felt like I was communicating with an old friend because she was so pleasant and encouraging!
She coached me on how to plan timed essays, encouraging me to go deeper and engage further with an argument.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Emma!Emma's brilliant. My daughter had been struggling to put down on paper what she knew in her head about her texts for AS English. She had no confidence when it came to writing essays, not knowing how to start, how to structure, how to say something. Emma broke down the jargon that ironically seems to populate English A level, and made it seem so much more straightforward. She helped her make connections, and gave her so much more confidence. Emma definitely helped her to get an A this summer.
Emma has been providing English tutorials to my daughter who is currently in Year 8. She has both engaged her (which is not easy!) and given her confidence in her work so that she has risen two grades to become one of the highest achievers in her class.
Emma has also been very flexible either helping her plan and think about her set homework, or providing material to stimulate discussion. My daughter very much enjoys the hour she spends with Emma each week now - I would highly recommend her!Emma was a great tutor for our children. As a result of her help they have been offered places at excellent selective secondary schools in North London. Most importantly they really looked forward to their weekly sessions with Emma, who managed to make learning fun.
