Hello! I am Emma Clayton, an experienced private tutor who teaches music with a professional and creative manner. If you wish to begin an extremely rewarding passtime, please read on!
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Clarinet, Saxophone (Classical and Jazz), Recorder, Music Theory and Piano (for beginners). Theory can be taught alongside instrumental lessons or as a separate subject. I have also developed some exclusive private courses: Finger Wiggles Piano and Music, for very young musicians aged 2-5, Special Fingers, designed for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Recorder Tamer, private fun lessons for child beginners. I also run a small, friendly ensemble for musicians aged 18 and over. Any musicians who are Grade 2 standard or above, and play any Woodwind, Brass, String, Hand Percussion or Keyboard instrument, are very welcome to attend Allegro Ensemble.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have Grade 8 Clarinet, Grade 6 Music Theory and Grade 6 Piano. I am self-taught to Grade 8 standard on Saxophone. I also have a B.A. Joint Honours Degree in English and Music (2.1).
- How much do you charge?
Lessons are £12 per half hour. I run a loyalty card scheme where pay-as-you-go students get a free lesson when the card is full! There are also discounts available if you book in blocks of 4 or more, £1 saving per lesson. If you book a block of 10 you also get 2 free lessons! Gift vouchers are also available, for lessons and Allegro Ensemble. Finger Wiggles are mini lessons of 15 minute duration so cost £6 each. These are pay-as-you-go only. Special Fingers lessons cost £1 extra to those above as I design programmes unique to the individual. Allegro Ensemble costs £17 for 5 sessions. If you wish to join, the first band session is just £1!
- Where do you teach?
I am based permanently in Stoke-on-Trent, students also travel to me from the North Staffordshire and Newcastle-under-Lyme areas. I have even had a couple of students from as far as Rugely and Alsager! Lessons are taught at my home in Lightwood (close to Longton), convenient to get to off the A50. Here I have a private music room with a piano for lessons (including Finger Wiggles), which has a pleasant homely feel. I also have a comfortable waiting area available for anybody to use. Allegro Ensemble takes place in Blythe Bridge and Foresbrook Village Hall.
- When are you available?
Teaching time slots are between and including: Mon 9:00 am- 6:15 pm, Tues 9:00 am- 2:00 pm, Wed 9:00 am- 4:30 pm, Thurs 9:00 am- 6:15 pm and Fri 9:00 am- 4:30 pm. For an updated timetable of available slots, please view my website. Morning lessons are officially term time only, although I do work with you to find a suitable later time slot during school holiday time.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
My students on the whole have been aged between 3 and 91! All ages and abilities are welcome. Learn for pleasure or take the exam route, it's up to you! If you wish to take exams I teach both the standard and the jazz ABRSM syllabuses. Exams are thoroughly prepared for including plenty of work on Scales, Sight reading and Aural tests, in addition to the set pieces. Finger Wiggles courses really break music down to the very basic elements and use rhymes and games to keep the lessons moving. These are ideal for very young musicians and are lots of fun! Special Fingers is very similar, the difference being that it is tailored to the student's individual needs and age range.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
In addition to instrumental lessons, I am able to help students prepare instrumental parts for their GCSE and A Level Music recital pieces. Also, if anybody is working on a composition I am very happy to assist!
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Have fun with your music! Learning an instrument is a very rewarding passtime.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have 10 years teaching experience, privately, at the Birches Head Music School and the Amadeous Music Academy. So far I have entered 51 students for exams through ABRSM, most of whom have achieved very high pass marks, with some obtaining Merits and Distinctions. Allegro Ensemble has now been running for 8 years, it has been challenging to get people interested but rewarding to create a group with such a good atmosphere. I previously ran a small music group within Fleetkins, a fun group for children and young people with Special Educational Needs, which has now unfortunately had to close. In 2012, along with students and members of Allegro Ensemble, I took part in the 100 Sounds Olympic Torch Community Parade (Stoke-on-Trent), organised by B Arts. I am hoping that this experience will lead to other exciting opportunities with this company.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
I have an Enhanced DBS Certificate and have also passed a Safeguarding Children course.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied Clarinet with Michael Thorley (previously Director of Music in Performance for the City Music School), from school until university. I was also a member of the City Youth Wind Orchestra for many years (Untill I was no longer a youth!). My Degree was at The Manchester Metropolitan University, Crewe and Alsager Faculty where I studied under Grahame Shrubsole, Martin Blaine and Kevin Malone (an American composer). Pauline Hardwick taught me Piano.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
I have quite a mixture of students. These include an retired gentleman learning some of his favourite music, a lady who was initially given a gift voucher for piano lessons, an 8 year old boy learning piano after completing the Finger Wiggles course and a lady who is learning saxophone and music from scratch. I also teach another elderly gentleman through the exam route, proving that it is never too late to start!

Thank you for helping me get my Grade 1 Piano.
Hi Emma, lovely to meet you at Melody's music lesson this afternoon [28/09/17]. Thank you for looking after her and giving her such a good lesson. She's totally fired up for the piano after her [Finger Wiggles] lesson and really enjoyed herself. The first thing she said when we got in the car was 'I really want that purple certificate!
