« Hannah taught me English and Spanish when we were living in Mexico in 2018. English, French and Spanish tutoring from an energetic languages graduate in Manchester

Methodology

I am aware that no two children learn in the same way, so I will be receptive to individuals' learning styles and adapt my teaching to suit them. During our first session together, I will open up a dialogue with pupils, discussing what their strengths are and what it is they struggle with, and I will play to their strengths to best help them learn.

As I am young, I am an energetic and fun tutor; I wil connect to my tutees and get to know them well, forming strong working relationships and thus understanding how best to encourage and motivate them.

When teaching French and Spanish, I will try and instil in pupils an all-round knowledge of the language - working on the four core skills of listening, speaking, writing and reading. I think it's particularly important to try and practice speaking in every session, as most British language learners lack confidence and are afraid to make a mistake. I will keep speaking practice light-hearted, fun and non-intimidating!

Experience

I graduated from the University of Birmingham last year, with a First in Modern Languages. I am currently working as a support worker for university students with additional needs, and I am keen to take on a new challenge working as a tutor, to further develop my interpersonal skills and help children and young people achieve their full potential.

I have a very high level of spoken and written French and Spanish, having lived and travelled extensively in Spain, Latin America and France. I'm hugely passionate about learning languages and I believe being able to speak another language opens doors, broadens your mind and allows you to experience things from a completely different worldview, something that's particularly important in the current political climate. I am very keen to pass on this attitude to the next generation!

I have an excellent command of the English language as well; I'm particularly good with spelling, grammar, and general writing style. What's more, I am able to explain these things in clear, concise ways, and I will always be patient and encouraging.

I have tutored friends informally in English (as a foreign language), French, and Spanish, and I have realised that I am naturally good at teaching, and I get a lot of joy out of seeing someone understand a concept or get better at something with my help. I want to help young people realise their full potential, improve their confidence and connect to the creativity and joy of speaking French / Spanish.

I have just as much enthusiasm for the English language - I am fascinated by words, knowledgeable about English literature and skilled at analysing written language. I would try and convey this love when tutoring English Literature or Language. Overall, I want to pass on a sense of the fun of language to young people.

I love to travel, and I'm also a musician (I sing and play the violin). I love dancing, cycling, swimming, and yoga.

• Languages: Level C2 (highly proficient) in French and Spanish – gained fluency from studies and through living and travelling in France, Spain and Latin America.
• Experienced in working with disabled young people (in my current role with Clear Links), and with children and young people (volunteering with youth charity the Woodcraft Folk). Able to form strong working relationships, motivating people and building their confidence with sensitivity and professionalism.
• Highly empathetic and understanding of people’s challenges. Skilled at emphasising people’s skills so that they feel supported to tackle their difficulties – developed these skills working for Clear Links.
• Excellent communicator, in both spoken and written forms – demonstrated while at university through seminar participation, presentations, and high grades in essays, and developed in retail and hospitality jobs.

Work Experience

September 2019-present: University support worker (notetaker)
Clear Links Support Ltd
Note-taking in lectures and seminars for students with a variety of additional needs. I also undertake occasional practical support for students, as per the individual’s needs.

October 2019-January 2020: Team member
Oké Poké, Church Street, Manchester
I worked as part of a small team in a busy independent restaurant: duties included serving customers, cleaning, washing dishes, and handling food according to food hygiene regulations.

August-December 2017: Intern
AB Traduction, Lille, France (certified translation agency)
I translated a variety of official documents between French, English, and Spanish; proofread documents translated into English; and fulfilled general administration tasks. I gained confidence and fluency through working in a French-speaking environment, and I learnt language specific to various industries, including education, law, and état civil (register of births, deaths and marriages).

October 2014-July 2016: Sales advisor
Ridgways Shoes, Exeter
I worked as part of a small team delivering specialised one-to-one customer service in an independent shoe shop: I had to communicate with people of all ages and with a variety of needs, listening to them and meeting their requirements. Other duties included managing stock, accepting deliveries, making and maintaining shop floor displays.

Education and Qualifications

2015-2019: BA (Hons) Modern Languages (French and Spanish), 1st Class, University of Birmingham
Modules included: core language, linguistics, literature, translation, and history.
Recipient of the Joan Barnwell Prize for the highest-graded French Literature essay in my year.

2018: Exchange Semester – Hispanic Literature and Linguistics, Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico

2012-2014: Exeter College, Exeter
A-Levels: French (A*), Spanish (A*) and Politics (B). AS-Level English Language (A).

2007-2012: St James School, Exeter
13 GCSE’s, grades A*-C.
Served as Head Girl, 2011-2012.

Volunteering Experience

2018-2019: Treasurer of University of Birmingham Folk Society – I was the key coordinator of a student music society, responsible for logistics, emails, and publicity, as well as leading sessions: this helped me develop my organisational and leadership skills.

2016-2017: Secretary of University of Birmingham Women’s Association – I assisted in organising events and activities around feminism, including speaker events and panel discussions, and contributed to creating a welcoming environment for women and non-binary people on campus. I took the minutes at meetings, managed digital communications, and supported my fellow committee members.

Since 2012: Volunteer with the Woodcraft Folk, a cooperative children and young people’s organisation with a focus on youth empowerment. A member since childhood, I have been involved in the organisation of various camps and events. Most recently, I was joint catering coordinator at a camp for over 100 people (May 2019).
2015-2017: trustee on DF Committee, the organisational body of the movement’s semi-autonomous 16-20 age group.

I knew Hannah when she was studying Spanish and French at the University of Birmingham and I was her personal academic tutor. Hannah is an excellent linguist. She is also very easy to talk to, reliable, and hard-working and I would recommend her as a tutor.
