I am able to provide help to children and adults of all ages who are looking to improve their English skills whether written, oral or reading. I have experience of one-to-one work with both comprehensive and primary aged children.
My teaching style depends entirely upon the person I am working with, as I believe teaching should when possible. I understand there are different levels of ability and understanding and everyone needs to work harder on particular elements of their own learning. With my current students, I have used my first hour with them to establish their strengths and weaknesses, their aims, and any needs specific to them. I also like to have a close discussion with parents to clarify exactly what they are hoping to gain from employing a tutor.
I have been giving lessons on an ad-hoc basis for around 7 years. My first experience of it was as a one-to-one in a comprehensive school, providing support to young people with learning and physical disabilities. I was mainly involved with a young man with very serious physical disabilities. I taught him both History and English and was able in one year to help him increase his GCSEs by two grades. He enjoyed the time spent with me and we developed a good relationship, which I think is key to tutoring.
Most recently I have been tutoring a family member who is home schooled. In this instance I have introduced her to GCSE exam papers in History, English and Maths and her ability has increased significantly.
In addition to my work with children and young people, I am employed as an HPL at the University of South Wales, teaching in History and English.
I have a BA (Hons) in History with English - 1st Class and am currently studying part-time for my PhD in History.
I have worked with children and young people in a number of roles, although my most recent school-based position was as a secretary. I have been employed as a Learning Support Assistant, Play-worker and Exam Invigilator, to name a few. At the moment I am a freelance writer and researcher and have recently carried out research projects for my University.
My skill in both History and English is well-proved through my academic background, but I also have a real passion for my subjects. I am an avid reader and writer and thoroughly enjoy all aspects of history, with the medieval and early modern periods being my specialist areas. My degree covered a range of historical periods and topics, and at GCSE and A-Level I actually focused on Modern British and American History.
