My specialist topics as a tutor are English language and literature. I graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2010 with a 2:1 degree in English. With this qualification I moved to South Korea and I was an English language teacher for two years. Since I returned to London I have undertaken further study and turned my experience for teaching English into a sustainable career by providing private lessons for the last three years.
As a tutor I take great satisfaction in helping students achieve goals to further their academic and personal development. Furthermore, I encourage and enable my students to acquire all the instruments they require to understand a subject or achieve a certain grade.
I believe that no two students are the same. Each student has his or her individual struggles and it is my job to assess these and how to overcome them. Correction with encouragement is my preferred teaching style and I am dedicated and determined to help my students improve in all capacities.
I have taught in many environments, including: private academies in South Korea; secondary schools in Austria and one-to-one help for university students. It is important that I adapt my teaching style and the resources I provide to the level and requirements of my students. I am dedicated to providing top quality tutelage with a detailed and personal plan for my students. I also encourage my students to do small exercises that I provide for homework to help them improve on self-study whilst also learning in a focused environment.
I prefer all of my lessons to be at least 90 minutes long. Therefore, a single class costs £45. I provide all of the relevant materials plus homework if the student requires it at no extra cost.
English Tutor, Self-employed, London, September 2013 – to present
Since returning from South Korea I have been working freelance as an EFL and academic English tutor. I have continued to teach students of varied abilities and ages. During an initial phone consultation, I discuss what areas the student would like to improve on and how I can provide materials to ensure language development. As lessons progress I advise whether further tuition is required and what other areas need improvement. I strive to make the lessons as enjoyable as possible and introduce topics that the student has an interest in. Furthermore, I have attained contracts at private academies in London, a state school in Austria, and taught business English to senior employees of the Italian bank, Banco Desio, and the founder and CEO of Press Glass (Europe’s largest producer of glass). In regards to teaching English as an academic subject I have extensive experience from primary levels to University. My main focus is to improve understanding and prepare the students for exams and success.
English Teacher, Andover Language School, 706-230, 3F Gosan Building, 17 Nobyeon-Dong. Daegu, S. Korea: November 2012 - September 2013.
At Andover I worked within a team of Korean and English teachers. We alternated in teaching English to elementary and middle school students (6 - 14 years old). I performed all the expected duties of a teacher to a very high standard. This job substantially contributed to improving my communication skills. I have learnt how to contribute to and maintain a successful and friendly working environment where language barriers could be an issue. I really enjoyed working with children. I have developed into being an engaging mentor as well as a trustworthy peer.
