I like to get to know what makes the child tick before instilling a set method of teaching, as everyone is different and learns in different ways. I like to use sounds and pictures in addition to just the book/set stimulus, and I ask lots of questions to help the child think about the wider picture, not just the text in front of them. I have degree- level knowledge of phonetics and the IPA and how this links to English Orthography, so I am fully prepared for questions from the child about 'why' something is the way it is when it comes to reading and spelling. Often kids like to be up and moving about - no one likes to sit at a desk for too long - so I sometimes take classrooms outside and we make 'sounds on the ground' out of leaves and twigs etc.
I am a 3rd year undergraduate studying English Language and Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh. I have tutored young children in literacy in the past, not only boosting their grades at school and moving up the progression levels but also helping to instill a love for reading and learning that goes beyond the classroom.
