Hello, my name is Peter Smith. For the past 18 years I have been teaching students from all over the world both as a private tutor and as a classroom teacher.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
English as a foreign language at all levels, I specialise in preparing students for the main University of Cambridge exams: FCE, CAE, CPE and IELTS. More recently, there has been a demand for me to help individuals prepare for the TOEFL exam. In addition, I have considerable experience in assisting students in improving their English pronunciation and intonation.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I am a graduate from London University with a BA ( Hons ) degree in German. I also have the CELTA qualification from International House in Piccadilly London
- How much do you charge?
I charge £18 an hour for lessons.
- Where do you teach?
I normally travel to to the students' homes, unless I am teaching online.
- When are you available?
Currently my availability spans Monday to Saturday, with slots available on most days. As a committed Christian I usually avoid working on Sundays.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I normally teach adults or teenagers who are 15 + years of age.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
Many of my students have been successful in the main Cambridge exams: FCE, CAE, CPE and IELTS and have gone on to study at a British university.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
This is done over Skype.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Many of my students, some of whom I have taught for over 5 years, have become valued lifetime friends. I see tutoring as a joint effort in which both tutor and student co-operate and share the success of their hard work. One of the most fulfilling aspects of teaching is making a real contribution to the personal development of an individual.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been teaching in Edinburgh and in the West Lothian area for the past 18 years both as a private tutor and a teacher in a language school.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Vetted through disclosure Scotland (children and adults), and I have an up-to-date DBS Certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
My early teaching years were spent at the Arch School of English in Edinburgh.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
I am employed part-time by an American English language school, whose students I teach online. I have received an award from them for outstanding achievement in teaching English as a second language.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
Currently, I have students who I either teach personally in Edinburgh or online. They include people from Russia, South Korea, Sweden and Brazil. At this time, most of my students are preparing for the International English Language Testing System exam, while others require general English. Most recent successes include one of a woman from Edinburgh who has passed IELTS with a band score of 8. Because of her success in the IELTS exam, she will now have the opportunity to work as a nurse in Australia. Further, a physiotherapist, who qualified in Spain, has also passed the exam with an overall band score of 7, despite his dyslexia. He can now practise as a physiotherapist in the UK.

Perfect! I have contacted Peter to help me with the writing part of IELTS test.
After several lessons and practice homework I have achieved the IELTS score I needed to be able to register a professional body in UK.
The lessons and homework were tailored around my week point so I could strengthen them.
Maria has now attained a high level in all parts of her IELTS exam, which will now enable her to pursue her professional career in the UK. It was a pleasure for me to assist her in preparing for the written part of the exam.

Amanda is an extremely well-educated native English speaker who achieved at the highest level in the IELTS exam. As with many student, however, Amanda failed to reach the required score in the writing, which continues to be a major stumbling block even for the the most able students.
