English, Latin, Drama & Creative Writing Tutor Ealing, W London - Laura Jenkinson

Methodology

I have had many lovely compliments from my students, including "very unexpected", but for the most part they have described me as warm, caring and fun. Online, my help is described as "very effective."

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach English (Language and Literature) KS3, GCSE, ICSE and A-Level, Classical Civilisation KS3, GCSE and A-Level, Latin to GCSE, and Creative Writing at all levels.
I am also available to help you design teaching materials, or on a commission basis to create them for you.

I teach full time, but can critique essays online, offering marking and suggestions (NOT rewriting it for you), and offer a professional proofreading and editing service for writers. Go to my website (listed above) to find information on my Publishing Services, especially for those interested in self-publishing to print and eBook.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a 2:1 BA Hons (Dunelm) in English Studies from the University of Durham, which covered a range of genres such as Victorian, American and Children's Literature, Ancient languages, and Classical Literature. I also have a PGCE in Secondary English teaching from the Westminster Institute at Oxford Brookes. In between degrees I worked as a bookseller for two of the largest Academic booksellers in the UK; Waterstones in Bloomsbury (Gower Street) and Blackwell in Oxford (Broad Street), for which I also ran the bookclub/reading group and organised the children's storyteller, encouraging all ages to enjoy reading.

- How much do you charge?

Please see my fee listings above.
If you are interested in editing/publishing/commissioning, please contact me.
**I have now moved to Portsmouth and am teaching full time, so please note I am only available for online help as described above.**

- Where do you teach?

**I have now moved to Portsmouth and am teaching full time, so please note I am only available for online help as described above.**
I can sometimes help using Skype, or mostly by simply by exchanging documents over email. Email me to discuss your needs.

- When are you available?

I am afraid that, due to my move, I am not taking Summer students.

I can however offer proofreading/editing/criticisms of written work. For essays, I will not rewrite your schoolwork for you - that's cheating - but I will provide detailed advice and criticism of creative and analytical pieces.

(If you are interested in publishing eBooks, please go to the publishing section of my website.)

I also have a book out - 'Writing Essays: what you need to know' - available through my website!

*Recently some contact emails have gone to my 'Junk' folder! I now check it regularly so do please be persistent and I will respond!*

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I mostly teach secondary-age children, from 11 – 18. However, I have worked with older students, and adult clients on creative writing and proofreading projects, such as manuscript drafts for publication. Please discuss your needs with me to see whether I will be a suitable tutor for you.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

Please contact me to discuss arrangements for on-line tutoring. This can be approached in a number of ways, such as by using MSN, Skype, Blueteach, or by emailing documents, but needs to be discussed before deciding on the most appropriate method for the student's needs. These methods are available at a reduced rate.

Alternatively, you can use my interactive resources website (listed above), and sign up for free access to my most successful resources.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

Most of my students go up two whole NC levels (eg: from a 4 to a 6) at KS3, or two whole grades at GCSE and A-Level - my most recent AS student went from a C to an A in his retake, scoring 106/120. If we can't find time for an appointment, go to my website for access to the same resources I used with them! It only takes a little specific help and application to get BIG results!

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have taught for seven years at both state and private schools, in London and Hampshire. In that time I have also tutored GCSE and A-Level students, and run extra-curricular clubs in Drama and Creative Writing, students of which wrote and staged their own plays and musicals, scripted and filmed a feature-length film, and took a successful sketch show to the Edinburgh Fringe. I teach between 4 - 6 private students a week, work for Local Authority LSA departments on an ad-hoc basis, and also teach distance learners online and via email for the IGCSE through an Oxford-based organisation.
I also proofread for educational publishers and write course content; I have recently been working on a course for the IGCSE English Literature.
Privately, I am developing a resources website (listed above) on which you can find free resources, including my most successful tutoring resources, as well as specialised GCSE help, and I have just added resources for studying/revising this year's CIE IGCSE Literature poetry. My book 'Writing Essays: what you need to know', a colourful manual developed with my tutees especially for independent learners, is now available through my website and on Amazon as a paperback or eBook.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I have Enhanced CRB certificates from my previous and current employment.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I tutor online with Wolsey Hall Oxford Distance Learning, which is a distinguished Distance Learning and Home Schooling provider of IGCSEs and other courses.
If you are looking for advice or help with learning a new subject as a mature student, or home schooling your pupil rather than having regular tutoring additional to school, supported distance learning may be a good route for you, with me as your tutor.
