I offer my first lesson for free, as this lesson allows me to receive all of the necessary information I need in order to plan our lessons accordingly. In this one hour session, I ask the student which school year they are in, which subject they need help with (Language or Literature), and which exam board they are with. I would request to see a past paper or any evidence of recent work from the student, in order to get an idea of where the student is at. If this is not possible, I ask the student to complete a past paper, in order for me to get an insight into where they are and what needs work on. From this, I would then plan each lesson according to the student's weaknesses. I dedicate much of my lessons to the structure of exams/style of the paper; I take my students through the paper, step by step, question by question. Each session, we will focus on one specific question and go over what is required for that question. By the end of our sessions, the student will (hopefully) understand what is required for each question and the steps to take in order to ensure all of the question's requirements are covered. I also create my own resources to guide the students through their exams - this includes a breakdown of the steps you need to make in order to successfully answer each of the exam questions, as well as my own example answers. However, I also have an adaptable teaching style; if my student were to find this dictatorial style of teaching unhelpful, I would create more interactive lessons where we work together to answer questions until the structure and requirements become more familiar.
I have gained teaching experience in five different schools across two months; I have completed a London Schools Internship in Brixton, a teaching mentoring scheme, and have been a private tutor for one year. I begin my English PGCE (training secondary English teacher) at the University of Oxford this September, 2019.
I have 13 GCSEs: 5 A*s, 4 As, and 4Bs, as well as four A Levels and EPQ. I am in my third year of my Undergraduate degree in BA English Literature and History at the University of Exeter, and have a confirmed place at the University of Oxford to commence my English PGCE in September, 2019.
Perfect! Katy is a lovely person and extremely dedicated in helping people achieve the best grades they can.
I’m want to apply to medicine and therefore need a 6 in English language, I previously only had a 4, Katy helped me go from a 4 to a 6 grade in under 2 months before my exam; I’m positive that if I had given her more time to help me I would have achieved much higher grades.
She is truly amazing and I would definitely recommend her to anyone who is looking for a English tutor.
Harjot was a very determined and dedicated student, who worked diligently at each and every one of our sessions together. She took on board everything I taught her, and constantly proved to me that she was willing to put in the extra hours in order to improve her English grade. A fantastic student with a very bright future ahead of her, I wish you every success.
