A comment from a dyslexic student who passed both English Language and Literature GCSEs in 2019 says it all: "Thanks for showing me I could do it, when I thought I couldn't". Clients say I’m kind, calm and positive, deliver excellent and effective tuition, know my subject inside out, build students’ self-esteem and confidence, help them increase their grades, and more. I want students to become independent learners, thoughtful critics, confident writers - and, crucially, to master the exam techniques and assessment criteria specific to the syllabus they’re following. Home-educated students in particular benefit from the latter. My one-to-one tutoring, whether online or in-person, gives students the time and mental space to consolidate their school or home learning, and to explore ideas and challenges that they may not have the confidence or opportunity for during busy school lessons.
My teaching experience and academic background mean I can identify areas of difficulty, and focus intervention on them. My advanced studies are especially relevant to A-Level English Language, and to the generally increased attention to grammar.
Educational goalposts are never static, so I ensure I'm up-to-date with English syllabi in all GCSE, iGCSE and AS/A-Level examination boards. I attend exam board training events and language conferences, and belong to professional bodies. I have current, enhanced DBS status.
I’ve tutored in-person for many years, and am convinced online tutoring is just as valuable and effective - recent successes include iGCSE in Dubai and Jerusalem. I taught English and related areas at post-16 colleges and university for 20 years, but have tutored all ages from KS2 to adult, and all levels from basic literacy to undergraduate.
I specialise in English Language and Literature. I have a doctorate in the area of linguistics relevant to the stylistic analysis you’ll do in the new GCSEs and A-Levels. I help you improve your grade by focusing on your particular needs - and on "what the examiner wants". My lessons are interactive: to learn you need to think and engage, not just watch & listen. I use Skype, Zoom, and Google Docs for online lessons . I’ll want you to do homework and/or pre-reading so you’re ready to contribute to lessons and get the most from them. The new GCSEs want you to write about your ideas and perspectives, which students often find unfamiliar - you’ll get plenty of guided practice in my lessons.
