BA English Literature student offering lessons in English literature for all ages

About the lesson

I believe that enjoyment is a vital component of learning and that if you enjoy something, you will be more motivated to engage.

I therefore try and make my lessons as fun and engaging as possible.

Moreover, students have different ways of learning. In my first few lessons I think it's important to experiment with different methods, finding out what format and structure works best for the individual. You can give me feedback after lessons too, and I will tailor the following lesson to your needs.

English, with its abstract concepts, complex language and structure, and almost infinite interpretations, is a challenging subject. But if you break down a subject area into themes, into concepts, into certain structures, then things become simpler.

I can provide resources which will help students to engage with specific texts/ texts in general, develop their close analysis and work on essay structure, which I understand is one of the hardest parts of English Literature.

While I am happy to teach any kind of English literature, my main strengths lie with the current A level and GCSE syllabus (of which I have many resources available from my own exam preparation which I can give you to work in your own time too) and with literature from 1550-1750, on which my degree is currently focused. This includes works of Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, Behn, Sydney, Wyatt, Swift, Donne, Wroth, Pope, Milton and many other poets and dramatists from the period.

I also teach creative writing; I believe that sometimes approaching literature from a creative point of view, a different angle, is a great way to open up your eyes to the mechanics behind literature and to increase understanding of the concept behind literature, after all what is literature? It is a question that remains unanswered to this day.

About Rachael

I am an English Literature student at the University of Sheffield. I study a range of literature, including contemporary literature, creative writing and Renaissance poetry and drama and more. This breadth knowledge of English literature means I can tailor my lessons to individual needs, no matter what texts you may be studying or areas you may be interested in.

I have recently tutored a student at A level English literature, but have also volunteered in English lessons during my 6th form years.

I am 19 years old and completed my GCSEs and A-levels not long ago. Therefore, I have a good understanding of both exam formats, as well as the pressure placed on students to succeed. My priority will be to support students in both their learning and enjoyment of the subject.

I'm an approachable and friendly person and am always available for you to contact outside of lesson time, no matter whether your questions are big or small. I was head girl at my school and am inclusions officer for both the Trampolining Committee and German Society at the University of Sheffield. My organisation skills and ability to communicate well with a range of people are thus traits I pride myself on:)
