I focus on teaching primary-school aged children, but can also teach up to year 9 secondary level. I like to start with a small 'warm-up' activity that calms any potential nerves or anxiety surrounding reading or English that the child can hopefully grasp with ease. This will lead into a given area of focus. For example, reading comprehension may involve looking together at a short piece of text and pulling out any significant or interesting information about this - including what the child finds interesting, not only what is relevant to the text. It is also beneficial to know if the child has any favourite genres or books as an approachable starting point that makes them feel relaxed and familiarised.
I am a second-year English Language and Literature student who adored reading and words for as long as I remember (though I know many people are not the same!). I have long-term experience working with a child in order improve her reading age, while also making her reading time with me more relaxed and less pressurising than in a classroom environment. I also have experienced the educational publishing sector so have some background knowledge in the current English curriculum.
