Typically, I will separate lessons by three categories: prose, poetry, and drama. With prose and drama, I will expect the student to have read extracts or the entirety of the text and will initiate a discussion regarding the content and subtext. Throughout this conversation, I shall provide factual and contextual information relevant to the text which may facilitate the development of the student’s insight and literary analysis skills. I use the opportunity to present the student with a poem to practise unprepared and spontaneous debate, though again can provide information (such as author biography, historical context, literary terminology) to the student that may be helpful in them developing their own ideas throughout the course of the lesson. Students can request to discuss texts relevant to their own syllabus or interests, or I can alternatively provide texts which I believe would be most engaging for the individual student.
Ideally, this practise should allow the student to grow more confident in their debating and analysis abilities, which can of course be transferred to an essayistic piece of schoolwork. I should also hope that I inspire an interest in literature that extends beyond schoolwork and examinations by introducing them to literature that they may not be presented with in an academic environment, but will undoubtedly assist them in cultivating a greater sensitivity to the mechanics of literature. I set additional homework (such as further research or a short essay) as per the student/guardian's request, though would otherwise only seek to ensure that the student has read the relevant texts for lessons.
I am able to tutor students of all ages and am familiar with the GCSE and A Level examination boards in both England and Wales. I am able to provide teaching up to a high Bachelor's Degree standard.
I am a third year BA student of English at University College London. I received 100% marks for my English Literature and Drama A-Levels, and otherwise achieved A*A*A with an additional 100% grade in Fine Art at AS Level. I have experience in writing for stage, working with various prestigious theatres around London, and founded my own theatre company in 2020.
