- What kind of experience do you have?
I have extensive experience of one-to-one teaching and of working with teenagers. My testimonials on this page are the best indicators of my experience.
Please note that I charge £50 per hour for GCSE/IGCSE and £60 per hour for A-Level.
Before training as a teacher, I wrote publicity copy and press releases in the public relations industry. Consequently, I am able to help students to develop a clear writing style, to meet deadlines, and to keep within a word limit.
By the end of the first lesson I will have a clear understanding of the student's learning needs so that we can agree on how to continue. With my support, students motivate themselves to be creative and disciplined. Students of all abilities usually discover that they actually enjoy analysing texts and working with language. They are then equipped to meet the exam board assessment objectives.

A Fortismere parent says, "Louise is an exceptional tutor and I only wish we had found her earlier. She has tutored our academically able son as well as our daughter who is at the opposite end of the achievement scale. Our son was predicted a C grade and was bored of school worksheets and unchallenging tasks. Tutorials with Louise, whose subject knowledge is formidable, reignited his interest in the subject and his results were two A*s in Language and Literature. The next year, Louise recognised strengths in our second child that the school had completely missed. Our daughter was on the verge of giving up on English by the time she reached Y11 but Louise managed to turn that around. She engaged with our disaffected 15-year-old, giving her confidence that she could work hard, improve, and enjoy her subject too. Louise is firm and does not tolerate nonsense; at the same time she makes the lessons interesting. On results day our daughter exceeded expectations (her own and the school's but not Louise's) in both GCSEs by getting Level 5s (B/C)."
I have a number of GCSE English students who intend to take Sciences and Mathematics at A-Level and who said at the first lesson that they disliked studying English, particularly poetry. After a while, they discover that they quite like reading poetry and analysing texts, and are good at it. They also discover that being able to express themselves clearly in writing is not the futile activity that they originally thought.
I also teach highly motivated GCSE students who have chosen English as an A-Level option, and A-Level students who plan to study English at university. We enjoy a good deal of discussion about books and ideas as well as undertaking rigorous academic tasks. My A-Level students become more interesting in how they think and write about texts.

Thank you so much, you really made me fall in love with the subject.
Our daughter made remarkable improvements in the style and content of her writing under you, and achieved A*s in both English Language and Literature at IGCSE. Thank you for making such a difference and giving her important skills for life.
Without Louise our daughter would not even have passed her English GCSEs. With Louise, our daughter began to enjoy English, looked forward to tutorials and understood what was needed to achieve. She also really enjoyed handing in a higher standard of homework. She improved in other subjects too because she learned from Louise how to tackle difficult questions logically and analytically. Louise is one of the very best tutors - head and shoulders above all we have used over the years.
