- Which ages and levels do you teach?
KS3, 4 and 5.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I specialise in English Language and Literature at GCSE and A Level.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I plan lessons with a variety of appropriate and engaging activities. For younger pupils, key areas are developing imagination and vocabulary alongside accurate and effective sentence construction. Here, I also focus on accurate spelling and teach any word families that are not yet secure. I have a bank of resources to extend vocabulary and writing style. The second focus is improving reading comprehension. Again, I have a huge range of resources from over 20 years as an English teacher. For GCSE, I am able to help with the structuring of plans for Controlled Assessments. I also support learning and revising of exam texts such as Of Mice and Men and An Inspector Calls, covering gaps in understanding and developing skills of analysis and exam technique for both language and literature papers. I have a wide range of resources such as past papers to work on comprehension and exam technique for the Reading paper. For the Writing Paper, I focus on developing a more sophisticated style as well as helping students with the accuracy of their spelling and sentence construction.
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught Year 7 - 13 students of all abilities, boys and girls, from those who find English hard such as pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties to the most able. I was Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator for 6 years at John Penrose / The Harefield Academy and have attended many training courses focused on how best to help both ends of the ability range. My most recent post was at Bishop Ramsey School in Ruislip. I worked there full time for the last 5 years and left in July 2012 in order to work as an English tutor. I have taught the National Curriculum at KS3 and have a wealth of resources to tutor this younger age group. I can help KS3 pupils improve their reading and writing skills. I am currently tutoring pupils preparing for the AQA English Literature AS and A2, AQA English Language and Literature AS, AQA GCSE and Cambridge IGCSE.
