I have been tutoring in London since completing a Masters in English Literature at the University of Oxford, where I also read English Language and Literature, graduating with a First. During my time as a tutor, I have worked with a variety of students on a long- and short-term basis to work on study skills, essay planning and editing, revision, reading, analysis, and creative writing.
One key advantage of one-on-one tutoring is its specificity: if a student wants more help in a certain area, I can tailor my lessons to suit that requirement. I work really hard to help students to engage with the material they are studying, and to build a supportive and productive relationship with each tutee to make this possible.
My genuine enthusiasm for English is another key part of my approach: learning can and should be exciting. An important part of this is variety: I employ a range of strategies in lessons, from traditional text-based discussions and exercises, to interactive writing tasks, games, and creative challenges. Above all, I take a student-centred approach to tutoring, and aim to make each lesson a valuable and enjoyable experience.
As an Oxford graduate, I know the value of one-on-one teaching and have drawn extensively on this experience as a professional tutor, both in person and online. I have tutored very bright students, pushing them to explore their study material in new ways, and worked with many students preparing for a broad range of English assessments, from 11+ up to A Levels and Oxbridge admissions (including UCAS, interview, and ELAT preparation). My students have gained places and scholarships at some of the best schools in London, achieved outstanding results in entrance tests (from 7+ to 16+), and excelled in GCSEs and A Levels.
I have also tutored students who required broader help with motivation, revision, and study skills, or with English as a second language (particularly with students at international schools or abroad). These lessons cover general learning techniques including close reading, time-management, articulation, comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, and essay-writing. Helping to boost students’ confidence in these key skills has proved invaluable for subjects far beyond English, enabling students of many ages to feel more secure in their approaches to languages and humanities subjects, and towards exams and assessments generally. Building up these key skills is also an essential part of 11+ exam preparation.
In terms of pre-tests, I recommend building up a thorough knowledge of the 11+ English syllabus and focusing as much as possible on comprehension, grammar, and word problems. I use a variety of reading, writing, and problem-solving activities to familiarise students with the time-pressured nature of the tests and to encourage them to think creatively.

Perfect! Lily is a truly brilliant literature teacher who is intelligent, encouraging, supportive, and motivational! I recommend her highly! As a non-native English speaker from Taiwan 台灣 (East Asia), I initially found academic English super hard and felt very frustrated when I was doing my MA literature thesis proposal. Luckily, I found Lily on Superprof.com this February and have taken her English literature sessions since then. Her lessons are always supportive, helpful and, of course, wonderful! Lily is always able to explain in a simple and understandable way even the most difficult concepts and ideas. She greatly helps me improve my academic writing, reading, and even develop my English discussion skills. Now I feel more confident in English and even fall in love with academic writing ! Anyway, Lily is a fantastic teacher and I cannot thank her enough!!!
（如果你是來自台灣 香港 澳門 及大陸學生, 我相當跟你們推薦Lily老師的英文課程！其實我的英文底子不是很好, 經常文法錯連篇, 然後又操著難聽的英文口音, 可是她卻不厭其煩的幫我出整理出我所想表達的意思, 教我組織我的點子並將其用英文表達！ 她真的太棒太厲害了！）
Linda is a wonderful student. She is passionate about her subject and topic areas, and works very hard both in and between lessons.
