Education
University of St Andrews
Master of Arts - FIRST CLASS with Honours, English Literature (2014 – 2018)
Alex has a friendly, enthusiastic attitude to teaching and tailors her teaching style to what is best for each individual, as different people have different strengths and weaknesses. She is always open to help students on specific texts and gives feedback that really helps boost work up to an A/A* standard. I highly recommend Alex to ambitious students who would like to improve on their English skills.
Alex is one of the most hard working people I have ever met. She gives her all to everything she does and a genuine passion for discussing literature, that we both share, makes me confident she is an ideal English tutor. I know the great time and effort she spends in preparing for and tailoring her lessons. You should choose Alex because she really cares about the success of her students and does all she can to help them meet their own and their parents' expectations.
Alexandra hosts lessons of the highest quality, she encompasses fun and education seamlessly throughout her sessions. She does a great job at helping me build on my weaknesses with her personalised teaching style and motivational attitude. Highly recommended.
Alex is so lovely, she radiates such a positive attitude to learning and really boosts my confidence with my writing. What my college teachers take months to help me understand, Alex accomplishes in a lesson or two. I would definitely recommend having Alex as a tutor to anyone aiming for an A/A*grade.
Alex did not just help me to achieve an 8 in my English GCSE: she inspired me to love a subject that had previously been my least favourite! Her patient and kind attitude meant that I never felt like I was being patronised and her lessons were the most entertaining English lessons I have ever had - I’m sad they’re over! I can’t recommend Alex enough.
Alex is an excellent person to work with. We completed a project together where Alex was able to demonstrate her amazing leadership skills. Alex is incredibly confident, personable and dedicated to improving the lives of others. For these reasons, I would highly recommend Alex as a personal tutor.
Alex is a fantastic choice for a tutor and I would absolutely recommend her. I've known Alex for 7 years. I tutored Alex when she decided to undertake the serious challenge of learning English Literature in a compressed year as an additional A-level, because she had realised she wanted to study English at university.
This in itself says so much about how much Alex dedicates herself to English and the type of determination to succeed and joy in literature she passes on in her tutoring. I studied English at Oxford University and I have no doubt Alex also could have done so.
Alex prepares for every lesson and thinks deeply about what you need as an individual. She is a really grounded, funny, empathetic tutor with a deep understanding of how to help you improve your analysis and writing to change your grade, but she will approach this in a fun and enthusiastic way so you can succeed but also enjoy your time.
English is a really great, exciting subject once you spend time building your confidence. It doesn't have to be a horrible slog to write an essay. There are some simple building block areas someone can show you how to improve, for example, how to analyse a text closely while referring to language not just theme and how to write in a way that structures your thoughts and demonstrates to the examiner how you are thinking. Alex addresses these while other tutors might skip these steps, but this is what makes the difference in grades.
With your texts, being able to speak with someone who can help you draw out your thoughts and build up the different stages of your thinking can totally change writing your coursework essay or prepping for an exam from something difficult into something where you can build up your progress each lesson and it starts to feel like it's really worth it to express your thoughts. Feeling able to express yourself and share your thoughts with other people is the whole point of English! Alex can help you do this and you will be really glad you chose her to work with.
