Experience A-Level and university maths tutor. Pure, mechanics, engineering maths and quantitative methods all covered. Online tuition (any time), in-person tuition (weekends in London Kings Cross St.

Methodology

The lesson revolves around student needs:

• Exam preparation – we focus on understanding the content, then selected seminar topics and finally exam past papers.

• Selected topic work – firm focus on one topic includes highlighting the essential workings and the applications of the course.

• Project support – often students don’t know where to start. I review your lecture material and discuss you thought processes and methodology.
A-Level, university and mature students are all welcome. I have extensive experience with students resitting and requiring exam preparation.

One of our best tutors! High-quality profile, qualifications verified and response guaranteed. Dorothy will plan your first lesson with care.

Experience

I graduated in Chemical Engineering, became a qualified chartered accountant (ACA) and have over a decade of post qualification experience in accounting, audit and finance. I am now taking a career break to study a PhD in Chemical Engineering. It is something I have always wanted to do and indulges my love of numbers and numerical analysis.

My experience leaves me uniquely placed to tutor:
• Finance – Investment appraisal, NPV, IRR, ARR, payback, dividend valuation model, CAPM, WACC. Particular experience in Imperial College Business School and University of Bath's corporate finance modules.

• Financial and Management Accounting – all aspects at university, business school and professional qualification levels. Practical experience of accounting modules from Imperial Business School, University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent Business Schools.

• Mathematics – A-Level, business maths, engineering maths and university applied maths. Extensive experience of tutoring the Edexcel syllabus at A-Level to Year 13 students and engineering maths/ further maths to Imperial College, University of Surrey and Coventry University engineering students.

As an ICAEW accountant, I am able to provide support for particular topics or more rounded help for revision. I cover all the ICAEW certificate and professional stage topics and SBM and CR at the advanced stage.

I tutor both in-person and online. Should you wish to have a sample tutorial, please message me and I’ll supply a suitable link where I tutor Accounting (depreciation) and Maths (the binomial expansion).

No course is too difficult and no lecturer too incomprehensible. I am happy to teach anyone. Groups and mature students are especially welcome. Send me a message and we can discuss the specifics of your situation and take things from there.

Dorothy's response

Hello Elliot,

Good to meet you and glad you found the session helpful. I think we should keep the sessions to max 1.5hrs, unless you are particularly well rested! It's best to absorb information efficiently.

We worked through the first lecture on differentiation and outlined the fundamentals of how differentiation works. We also found there are standard forms and that differentiation can be applied to real world problems. I left you with some homework that focused on progressing your understanding rather than doing lots of repetitive calculations.

Hope to see you soon.

Regards,

Dorothy

Dorothy is simply amazing. I just passed my accountancy exam (which I had failed 3 times in a row before) with flying colours and it was all because of her.

She takes the time to listen to you and understand where you feel like you are having problems and then she works along side you to find the best and most comfortable way to deal with those problems.

One thing that I really liked is that she has absolutely no problem with explaining a topic again and again and again, until you understand.

Dorothy responded quickly and efficiently to my initial enquiry. The session was well tailored to my needs and abilities; the pace was just right and and time taken to explain answers. I found Dorothy patient and conscientious and would recommend her.

Dorothy has filled many gaps in my knowledge, as well as making me feel a lot more confident and interested in the subject. Dorothy's teaching style is perfect for me. Any question I throw out at her she is able to respond back with a very easy and clear explanation, making studying a lot less daunting. She is extremely patient and if you don't understand a topic she will explain it over and over again. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying with her!

Thanks Dorothy!

Dorothy was hugely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and found easy ways to explain statistical indices through basic examples which I initially found challenging.

On top of this, firstly, Dorothy spent a further 30 minutes with me until we finished the test we were working through. Secondly, she instigated a Skype call the following morning to go over the spreadsheets we had been working on previously.

Interview with Dorothy

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Dorothy — I wanted to tutor, but didn't have the confidence to do so. Then one day I had financial shortfall and thought, 'Well, let me share my knowledge and see'. I have been positively surprised by my growing client base and students glowing feedback. The short-term role might yet become a career. I applied for teacher training and will start my course in September 2019. Wish me luck.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Dorothy — I teach A-Level Maths, Physics and Chemistry. These were the foundation of my degree in Chemical Engineering. I also teach modules for the ICAEW exams and accounting at degree level, as I am a qualified chartered accountant.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Dorothy — I loved school and can't think of one teacher in particular. What I bring is the general feeling that everything is possible in the time that I have with the student and an infectious enjoyment of my subjects.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Dorothy — Patience and technical knowledge of what you are trying to teach.
QUESTION 05 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Dorothy — I was the goal keeper in my class's netball team. We lost everything. What can I say? I was an academic child, but tall for my age.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
Dorothy — My subjects are fine. The main challenge I face is becoming accustomed to being a full time tutor. Balancing face to face and online tuition is essential. Also pacing myself. I can't tutor 8 hrs a day. I would be a wreck.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
Dorothy — Being a full time tutor, I have to be flexible to students and their tuition times. The flexibility has given me the chance to focus on fitness. I go to the gym four times a week, have changed my nutrition and am currently progressing towards my goals. All good fun and not something I could do when I worked nine to five. My latest aim is to run or cycle 5km.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?
Dorothy — I love what I do and I learn as much from my students as they learn from me. :)
