My teaching method varies greatly from student to student. With many, I have guided them through the ABRSM exam path from grade 1 to DipABRSM level with wonderful results.
To others, I have helped them prepare for concerts or exams, but many students of mine simply wish to explore the piano at their own pace without external pressures. With them I introduce them to new music they might like to learn, or help them tackle a difficult work that they've always wanted to play!
Technique is worked on always with a musical objective and a great emphasis is placed on learning how to play with ease and expression.
As we adjust to these challenging times, I now teach the majority of my students online. If you would like to try this option, simply make sure your phone (or other device) can record a side angle view of your hands and the keyboard. My current program of choice is Zoom but Skype/Whatsapp/FaceTime are all options too.
Hello! I'm a pianist, piano teacher and composer. I've been teaching for over 10 years. I divide my teaching time between giving private lessons at home or online and, before lockdown began, going into law firms to deliver lessons, concerts and music workshops.
I gained a Master's degree in piano performance at the Royal Academy of Music, as well as it's teaching qualification, the LRAM. Since then, I have taught beginners right up to conservatoire level.
"I am so glad Shin was recommended to me. After 25 + years of not playing, I was inspired to take the piano up again; and while a lot came back very quickly (it’s remarkable how much of what is learnt in your youth sticks!) time at the piano has been so much more productive since I started working with Shin. He has great patience, and a very attractive way of developing technical points out of the music itself. The musical point of what we are doing is immediately obvious, and that makes practice so much more rewarding."
“It was a blessing that Shin agreed to teach our son who does have some music abilities but is in general need a special education attention, partly due to his language skill difficulties. As a talented young professional pianist and musician, with his incredible patience, hard work, excellent and innovative teaching skills and methods, and especially his true love for music and a kind heart, Shin managed to give our son the inspiration and encouragement he needed to grow and succeed as a prospective professional pianist.”
“Shin is able to explain both the mechanics and the beauty of the piano in an engaging and comprehensible way which captures your enthusiasm. Endlessly patient, I feel fortunate to have found him.”
