I’m a recent graduate from the University of Edinburgh gaining a 1st class honours in English Literature and French, with a distinction in spoken French. I am confident with teaching English Language, Literature, Theatre Studies and French to higher levels, as well as Maths and History to GCSE level. Further to this, I’m happy to offer general assistance with reading and writing skills, as well as more specific guidance with essay writing, exam technique and interpreting exam questions across a range of subjects.
I’m friendly, reliable and passionate about teaching. I strongly believe that the best teachers are those who are intuitive to the needs of their students and cater their teaching method accordingly. I consider it very important to identify problem areas and start building confidence from the very first session. For longer term students I believe it is essential to comprehend the foundations of any subject thoroughly. With language lessons this may come in the form of not only memorising grammar patterns, but really understanding why, how and when certain phrases should be used. For literature this may come in numerous forms, for example understanding ‘how to read’ literature so that you can gain the most from it. However, for short term students wishing to work on a particular essay or exam, I consider myself to be adept at understanding the specific requirements of exams. Having undergone continuous examination throughout my university career, I believe I have honed a very strong examination technique – the most important quality being understanding precisely what your examiner is looking for in a response. I am happy teaching both short and long term students of varying levels and abilities.
I have previous tutoring experience teaching English Literature, voluntary experience in teaching French, English and Maths, and have worked briefly as a cover teacher and drama and arts assistant. I am also an experienced proof-reader and editor with strong essay writing skills. I’m passionate about books, reading and the arts and look forward to getting the chance to pass it on to others!
