I have always adapted my lessons to suit the requirements of my students and the music they want to learn.
Music is a subject that should always bring joy, even when there are hurdles to overcome. For beginners, maximising the practical side, and concentrating on the skills they already have, is key. For more experienced students, sharing the excitement of mastering a difficult piece, discovering the harmonic structure of a pop song or convincing them that they can create their own compositions can keep that enthusiasm alive.
I believe it is vital to always have a performance in view; I have never known a musician who has not enjoyed sharing their music with an audience.
I read Music at Caius, Cambridge, and qualified as a secondary music teacher 20 years ago, but I have enjoyed teaching music to people of all ages for over thirty years.
I have worked in primary and secondary schools, 6th form colleges and Drama colleges, as Head of Department, piano teacher, choir and orchestra trainer, drama teacher and as musical director.
l am particularly keen to encourage all my students to perform, and take great delight in finding and arranging music to suit their tastes and abilities from Rock to Renaissance.
My specialist areas are composition, music history and analysis.
I may need to include travel if the journey is particularly long or parking is unavailable.
With younger students half an hour is generally appropriate.
