My teaching method is based on practise, practise, practise with lots of error correction, feedback and encouragement. Anyone can do well in the English language but it requires work. I encourage students to do that work.
I am an English Language Teacher with over 23 years of experience. I have taught hundreds of students in five different countries to successfully pass IGCSE English First Language and IELTS Speaking and Writing and I am looking forward to continuing that success.

I taught on Cambly for over four years. Although I was hired to teach general conversation, my main field of expertise was preparing students for the IELTS Speaking and Writing Exams.
2015 – 2018 Singapore International School – Jakarta
In 2015, I accepted a position as an IGCSE First Language English and Literature teacher. My main duties were teaching the IGCSE syllabus and preparing students for the exams. However, I was also involved in many other areas of daily school life including being part of the committee for school events and running an after-school homework club.
2013 – 2015 English Education Center, Jakarta
In 2013, I accepted a position as DOS at EEC. My duties included teaching, teacher training, writing tests, scheduling, teachers’ timetables, salaries. I was also involved in setting up a new Business English syllabus.
2009 – 2013 Jakarta International Korean School
In 2009, I was re-employed by JIKS and given the responsibility of teaching English to three different levels at middle school; elementary, intermediate and advanced. In addition to teaching English, I taught morals and ethics once a week and film-making twice a week. In 2011, I was moved to the High School where I was given the responsibility of attempting to get the lower-achieving students up to an acceptable level of English writing proficiency; a task I believe I achieved quite well.
2006 – 2009 Singapore PSB School
I taught Secondary 2, 3 and 4 IGCSE First Language English and IGCSE English Literature, I taught IGCSE English as a Second Language, and I was also in charge of teaching Literacy for Secondary 1 and 2. As PSB was a relatively new school; I was also responsible for building-up resources and worksheets for both the English Language syllabus and the Literacy syllabus. I was also responsible for organising and finding resources for teacher training.
2004 – 2006 Jakarta International Korean School
In 2004, I was employed as an English teacher for JIKS. I was responsible for delivering ‘multimedia’ based lessons preparing students for the TOEFL exam that students took during Grade 12. Many lessons were presented using Microsoft’s PowerPoint and other types of multimedia. As I was one of the few teachers who had extensive experience of Microsoft programs, I was asked to present a number of training sessions to help teachers make the transition to (for the school) new technology. I was also involved in mentoring teachers and coming up with resources and ideas for teaching ICT.
2002 – 2004 EF English First Jakarta
I started as a Director of Studies for EF English First in 2002. As DOS of EF English First Pluit I was in overall charge of the development of materials outside the remit of EF Education. I set up teacher training and observation programmes including peer observations. After a few months, I established a Corporate Training Division to take advantage of the growing market for Business English in Jakarta.
1998 – 2002 Freelance Work Milan
From 1998 - 2002, I worked in Italy where, for the first year, I worked as a Director of Studies for a small school in Milan. During my time in Italy, I freelanced for companies as diverse as Versace, Heinz, Corriera della Sera, Il Sole 24 Ore, Aventis, Beyer and Pharmacia and Upjohn, all of which were large national or multinational companies.
1997 – 1998 EF English First Moscow
In my second year of teaching my responsibilities were to teach English to all levels and ages. In Moscow, I had my first opportunity to teach TOEFL, IELTS and the Cambridge FCE exam. I also had the opportunity to try my hand at teacher training, as the quality of teaching in Russia was low enough that even I had something to offer.
1996 – 1997 Saint George’s Skopje
From 1996 – 1997, I taught in Macedonia. I taught all levels of English and all ages from 5 - adults. I was also responsible, with my colleagues, for writing tests at the end of each semester for the levels we were teaching.
Mr. Giles taught me English in Singapore International School, Kelapa Gading, Jakarta up to GCSE level. My classmates and myself all obtained good grades despite English being a second language for most of us. Mr. Giles was a great teacher, he has an excellent sense of humour and was the favourite teacher for most of us. I'd be very happy if he was teaching me now.
Giles is an enthusiastic and competent English teacher. He combines thorough planning with an extensive knowledge of the both the fundamentals and more esoteric parts of the language to produce superior, engaging lessons. You should definitely pick Giles as your teacher, if you want to progress.
Excellent English teacher with good sense of humor.
