THANK YOU FOR VISITING MY PROFILE. I AM CURRENTLY FULLY BOOKED AND THEREFORE UNABLE TO ACCEPT NEW STUDENTS FOR JANUARY. PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO CHECK BACK NEXT MONTH IF YOU ARE STILL LOOKING FOR TUTORING. MANY THANKS.
I believe that excellent teaching is attentive to the student’s needs and current level of learning. I like to start by setting and agreeing on achievable goals and planning a realistic curriculum for achieving these throughout our sessions. I like to give feedback to students that is encouraging and compassionate, while rigorously and constructively pointing out errors and offering positive directions for improvement. I like to introduce fresh and exciting material and challenge students in order to ignite an ambition to succeed and achieve at the highest level. I like to inspire, build confidence and offer a practical route for realising students’ goals and ambitions. I encourage a questioning attitude and big-picture thinking about first-hand material – moving from close reading to an understanding of a text’s larger cultural implications.
I am an experienced university lecturer in English Literature: since gaining my PhD from Cambridge in 2005 I have worked in UK higher education for over 15 years and have taught at the universities of Southampton, Cambridge and Huddersfield. I am also a qualified secondary teacher of English language and literature. I can provide all levels of secondary teaching from year 7 to year 13, including Key Stage 3 English, GCSE English language and English Literature and English literature A level. I can help with University admissions preparation (interviews, personal statements, Oxbridge admissions written test and interview preparation, mock interviews), university level assessments or essays, BA dissertations, MA and PhD dissertations. I can help develop essay writing skills, formulating an argument, grammar, spelling and all other aspects of academic writing for secondary and university students.
As former Director of Studies in English for Newham College and fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge, I gained extensive experience with the Cambridge admissions process, including selecting candidates, setting and marking written admission tests and conducting interviews. I am highly experienced with all forms of university teaching, including Oxbridge-style supervision and small group teaching, university lectures and seminars. I am an active researcher and have published widely in my field, including journal articles and an academic book on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature. I currently research and write on the Romantic period and the literature and history of warfare.

Perfect! Dr. Ildiko is extremely attentive and listens to what it is I require from our sessions. In only a few short weeks, I have found I am writing essays more efficiently, quicker and, more than anything, I am learning how to recognise mistakes and poor essays, meaning I am making fewer errors on my final submissions. As a first year student, I feel with Dr. Ildiko's help, I am building a strong foundation for my future studies and essays. She is a valuable asset, extremely attentive, and very dedicated to helping each student achieve their desired aims from her lessons.
Rhiannon is an extremely bright first-year English student, who needed some feedback on her very first essay and advice on how to manage time around writing assignments. Rhiannon's writing is highly promising, with her essay already in the high 2.1 band. Her close reading of the Plath passage showed a great deal of insight, strong analytical skills, good use of technical terms and tremendous nuance. I advised her that structuring her work around an argument and building the essay up around this more systematically and consistently, together with tidying up referencing and formualting a clearer and more articulate introduction and conclusion, will help advance her mark into the first class category. We also discussed a few techniques for making essay preparation and writing more time-efficient and task-focused, balancing this carefully again the need to do meticulous research and careful note-taking. Iris strikes me as an ambitious and high-achieving student with high expectations toward herself. I have every confidence in her ability to get the high marks with slightly less time and effort as she gradually develops more routine around academic writing over time.
Perfect! She's fantastic. She gave hope to an adult learner who didn't think he could achieve. Very rare teacher who can teach all levels. A gem!
Phil is a very motived Master's student, who already has pretty solid academic writing skills and is able to handle complex critical sources competently. Phil is good at understanding the main arguments and conclusions of the academic articles that he reads, which is clearly communicated in his writing. Phil will need to make sure that he clearly responds to the assessment brief and responds to all the points raised there. He needs to show more evidence of the knowledge of the field by incorporating further sources. He also needs to make sure that he writes a critical evaluation of his chosen source - as described in the brief - rather than simply a summary.
I was fortunate enough to have Ildiko as my supervisor for an MA project last year. She was a fantastic support and excellent advisor as I worked to complete my thesis. Always providing detailed and meaningful feedback both written and in discussion. Her questioning techniques allowed me to draw my own conclusions and progress my ideas and thinking without feeling hemmed in or forced to adopt any position except those I wished to adopted. If you seek an insightful, professional and knowledgeable tutor, I cannot recommend Ildiko highly enough.
Ildiko is a fantastic tutor. She is conscientious, attentive and cares deeply about her students' progress and achievements. The level of feedback she gives on written work is exceptional. I would recommend her very highly.
Ildiko taught me during my undergraduate years at university, it was because of her enthusiasm and engaging lessons that I kept choosing her modules all through my time at university. Ildiko goes above and beyond with her help, guidance, and support as a teacher and her feedback on work is extremely detailed and beneficial.
I have also had Ildiko’s guidance as a supervisor on during my postgraduate studies and her knowledge and support has been invaluable to me during these difficult times. I would recommend Ildiko as a trustworthy and engaging tutor.
Ildiko is a dedicated and knowledgeable teacher, she has a professional attitude and an excellent sense of humour. I highly recommend her!
Ildiko is a fantastic tutor. She has built my confidence and instilled in me a passion for English literature. She is an incredibly supportive tutor who wants the best for her students.
