Each student is assessed initially to see where their musical interests lie, and then a suitable programme of study is discussed and agreed.
I ensure that the workload is appropriate and is always fun and enjoyable. Each student should leave each lesson feeling a sense of achievement and enthused, ready to continue practising for their next lesson.
My patient manner ensures that the lesson is relaxed, productive and pressure-free. I aim to develop skills of all students, regardless of their initial standard and aspirations.
Many will want to play just for fun, while others may aim to enter conservatoire education and ultimately a career in music.
I have over 30 years of flute teaching experience, varying from beginners to advanced level. I teach individuals of all ages.
I formerly taught flute at the Junior RNCM and I have now been teaching at Chethams School of Music for 35 years. I currently teach flute at several private schools in the North West.
I am also a flute tutor for the National Children's Orchestras of Great Britain. Additionally, I teach privately at home on a weekly basis and provide online lessons to those who prefer this method of teaching.
Over the years, I have gained many teaching successes, including students achieving good results in either their ABRSM/Trinity exams and Diploma qualifications. Many of my students have also secured places in the National Children's Orchestras of Great Britain, National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and conservatoires.
I studied at the RNCM with Trevor Wye, and was a prizewinner in the Young Artists’ Competition of the International Flute Association, held in the USA.
I was Principal Flute in the Performing Arts Symphony Orchestra for fifteen years, and I am currently Principal Flute with Sinfonia Viva.
As a freelance performer I have played with many of Britain’s leading orchestras including the Halle, Manchester Camerata, Manchester Concert Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Northern Ballet Sinfonia, Orchestra da Camera and the Philharmonia.
I also perform with the chamber ensembles Fourtune and Zephyr. I am one half of Appassionata, a flute and harp duo which has released a CD.

Since having Rachel my playing has improved massively! I've never had such a kind and inspiring teacher! Thanks to Rachel I have now successfully taken my my grade 8 and music college auditions.
Rachel is an exceptional teacher. As part of my Music Department, Rachel has diligently prepared many students for both graded examinations and GCSE/A-Level recitals and they have achieved outstanding results. Rachel has a calm, gentle and encouraging nature and ensures she gets the very best from all her students, whatever their starting points. Rachel is exceptionally well organised and punctual: a true professional. As an excellent player herself she is a true inspiration to young players. I would very highly recommend her in every respect.
I've been learning with Rachel for 7 years now and she really has worked wonders! Like all learners, I wasn't the greatest when I began my lessons with her and was very timid, which came across in my playing. Rachel immediately picked up on this and has since been determined to change this. This is a pure example of her patient nature as it definitely took me a while to begin playing a confident manner, but she still persevered, no matter how long it took me!After just two years of lessons with her, I decided that I wanted to make a career for myself out of music and she has given me not only the tools but also the confidence to work towards that goal. Her passion for teaching comes directly across in her lessons and this definitely reflects on me as I believe my passion for music has definitely been influenced by her enthusiasm in lessons. She also is incredibly helpful when it comes to events outside of the lessons as well and is very approachable.
I met Rachel at a workshop 2 years ago. Her playing and conversation inspired me to want to play with a better tone. She listened to my desires and took on the challenge of correcting 50 years of bad habits. She has sensitively taken me back to the basics, including how to hold the flute, position my hands and head, how to breath correctly, use the muscles in my stomach and embouchure. She knew that correcting these details was important to attain a good tone. Tuition started face-to-face and continued online during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rachel is very patient, knows how to encourage; observes her students well, spotting even the smallest of details, persistently correcting where needed. She has a very pleasant, caring manor and a healthy interest in her pupils. Learning with her is a real joy, each lesson is progressive and rewarding.
Thanks to Rachel’s professional tuition, I have an improved tone with better playing technique, giving me much more satisfaction. I highly recommend Rachel as a flute teacher.
