My aim is to make difficult material interesting and accessible for students, presenting it in a way that makes it memorable and easy to understand. In my experience as a University Lecturer, I have found that success comes when pupils begin to feel confident and proficient in a subject, as this is when they begin to enjoy the work and are happy to dedicate more time to it. I work to give pupils this confidence.
I am friendly and approachable, and believe that working in a style that boosts self esteem is essential to ensuring that children reach their potential. For each student, I develop a personalised learning plan that caters to their strengths and weaknesses, and I thensupport and enable them to reach their learning goals.
I am a University Lecturer, with over 10 years of experience of teaching young people, attained during my work as a seminar leader throughout my Ma and PhD, and then as a Lecturer for 3 years afterwards. I recently adapted my lecturing skills to teach primary pupils, including my daughter who is currently preparing for 11+ Entrance exams.
In adition to a first class BA, MA, and PhD, I have A grades in the core subjects of Maths, English, and Physics at A level standard. I have run University undergraduate courses from years 1 to 3 in the subjects of; Formal Logic, Critical Thinking, Philosophy of Religion, Free Will and Moral Responsibility. Responsibilities included devising course content, setting and marking exams and engaging in student pastoral care. I have also run classes in essay writing and planning.
I am used to making difficult material accessible and engaging to students of a wide variety of abilities. I am friendly and enthusiastic, and work to raise confidence and ability.
Lecturer in Philosophy
The University of Reading
I attained an Arts and Humanities Research Council award to complete a fully funded PhD at the University of Reading with Galen Strawson. This was successfully completed within the 3 years, not counting 1 year maternity leave.
Following the successful completion of my PhD, I was employed as a Lecturer at the University of Reading on a part time basis with a range of teaching, administrative and research responsibilities.
3rd year modules for which I have had sole responsibility: Further Logic, Free Will.
2nd year modules for which I have had sole responsibility: Philosophy of Religion, Introductory Logic.
Responsibilities for these modules include deciding on lecture content, devising lectures, setting reading-lists, lecturing, conducting seminars, marking, setting exams and coursework.
Students have consistently rated the quality of my teaching, and the quality of my courses generally as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’ on feedback forms. References available on request.
As well as a first class BA and MA, I have A grades at A level in the core subjects of English, Physics and Mathematics. This gives me a solid foundation from which to engage in entrance exam tuition.
