To understand any field, I believe the student needs to build a strong foundation of basic principles which link together to form a network of ideas. Memorising key facts and figures aids this process, but I consider this as a short-term solution to something which is a long term development challenge.
I use the course syllabus to identify the key concepts. Using the ideal gas law as an example, understanding how the kinetic energy of atoms on a small-scale correlate to system pressure on the large scale makes understanding the relationship between temperature volume and pressure a logical and easy to understand concept.
Though this I find that my students truly understand their subject and can apply the ideas in other aspects of life.
I am a Graduate Engineer working in the nuclear industry with an MEng Mechanical/ Nuclear Engineering degree from the University of Manchester with a year in industry. Currently I'm working towards becoming a chartered engineer.
