Every student is different and I tailor my teaching to each student's individual needs. I believe learners make the most progress when lessons focus on things that are useful and interesting to them. Whatever your goal in learning English, I will make sure my lessons are focused on helping you to achieve it.
I have 8 years experience teaching English communication classes and IELTS test prep at universities in Korea, Japan, and the Netherlands. Some of the places I have taught at include Chonnam National University in South Korea, Rikkyo University and Tokyo University of Technology in Japan, and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. I have helped many students gained confidence and improve their ability to communicate in English. I have also worked as an IELTS speaking test examiner so I know exactly what learners need to do to achieved their desired IELTS result. I studied English at King's College London and obtained a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Groningen.
Chonnam National University, Gwangju, South Korea – August 2017 to August 2019
I was employed for two years as a full-time English instructor at Chonnam National University. This role involved devising original teaching materials and lesson plans and assessing students on a variety of courses.
These courses included the credit-bearing English for Global Communication course. This course involved teaching the target language contained within the course textbook and preparing students for examinations based on its contents. I was also responsible for assessing students based on oral interviews and class presentations given at the end of the course, as well as recording and assessing student attendance and participation across the duration of the program.
I also taught a variety of communicative English classes for various proficiency levels at the university’s language education center. This involved creating engaging lessons based on text book material at lower proficiency levels and designing original teaching materials and lesson plans for more advanced students. I was responsible for assessing students based on final interviews, as well as placing students in the correct class based on oral level tests. Passing classes at the language education center is a requirement for many of the universities post-graduate programs, so it was essential that students were assessed fairly and consistently.
In addition to these programs, I was also been responsible for teaching and creating original teaching materials and curricula for other specialized classes. These included Teaching Training programs for public school teachers. This program focused both on improving teachers’ general communicative competence in English and helping them devise strategies for creating engaging classroom material and lesson plans. I also created materials for and taught students on a comprehensive English program for local government workers, with modules targeting specific areas of language competence such as speaking and listening.
Westgate Corporation, Japan:
Tokyo University of Technology and Rikkyo University – September 2016 to July 2017
Through Westgate Corporation, I was employed as a full-time English instructor on credit-bearing and extra-curricular university courses at two universities in Tokyo, Japan.
My first role was a teaching position on a credit-bearing course at Tokyo University of Technology (September 2016-January 2017), where I was responsible for devising lesson plans and creating original teaching materials to meet the learning goals of the curriculum, then teaching students using these self-generated lesson plans. The primary focus of this course was improving students’ oral communication in English, with a secondary focus on improving English reading and writing skills. This course required students to give a graded oral presentation at the end of the semester, which I was responsible for assessing. I was also responsible for maintaining accurate electronic and written records of student attendance and participation throughout the course.
My second position was as an instructor on an extra-curricular English course at Rikkyo University (May-July 2017), with the primary goal being to increase students’ communicative competence in English. A heavy emphasis was placed on devising student-centered tasks which provided students with maximum speaking time in class. Additional duties included maintaining an electronic record of student attendance and grading students’ proficiency across the duration of the course.
IELTS Speaking Test Examiner – Japan Study Abroad Foundation, Japan – January 2017 to August 2017
In addition to my teaching duties at Rikkyo University and Tokyo University of Technology, I was employed part-time as an IELTS Speaking Test examiner while in Japan. This required that I pass a test to ensure I could correctly follow the highly-standardized IELTS test procedures and then assess students at a level consistent with other IELTS examiners. Working as an IELTS examiner meant ensuring that both my test delivery and assessment remained consistent with the prescribed standards of an IELTS examination. I was monitored and assessed throughout my employment to ensure I correctly followed the strict IELTS examination procedures and assessment criteria.
The University of Groningen, The Netherlands – January 2016 to July 2016
Whilst studying for my master’s degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Groningen, I held an internship teaching position on a credit-bearing English Proficiency course at the university. This course was mandatory for students studying English Language & Culture at the university. The aim of the course was to improve the written and oral academic English skills of students who were studying their main degree program in English, and therefore had advanced English language proficiency.
I was involved in the pre-semester curriculum design process for this English Proficiency course and then had responsibility for devising lesson plans, teaching students, and providing in-depth feedback on essays produced over the duration of the course. I was also involved in designing and assessing the final oral and written examinations students took at the end of the course.
My primary duties in this position included: creating guided reading questions to help students comprehend sociolinguistic papers written in advanced academic English; creating examination questions for credit-bearing oral and written examinations; devising and delivering lesson plans targeting specific areas of academic writing and oral communication in English; creating rubrics for grading oral and written examinations; assessing oral and written examinations; providing students with detailed feedback on essays and oral debate tasks conducted during the course; and using the university’s virtual learning environment to provide students with feedback, upload student resources, and maintain records of students’ attendance and attainment.
The British Centre, South Korea – March 2012 to July 2014
I was employed on two separate year-long contracts at this private language academy in Gangnam, Seoul which catered for a range of adult language learners, with most students being Korean university-aged students who wanted to study in the United Kingdom. While most of the students fell into this category, there were also classes focusing on Business English, which mainly attracted older adult students. This academy also offered classes in IELTS exam preparation.
I was given full responsibility for designing my own lesson plans and teaching materials while working in this position. I gained a great deal of experience in selecting and devising appropriate teaching materials for students of different proficiency levels, as the classes ranged from pre-intermediate to advanced. This role gave me a wide range of experience in meeting students’ needs, from focusing specifically on improving students’ ability to meet the reading, listening, writing and speaking requirements of the IELTS examination to improving the communicative competence of students who were hoping to use English in everyday situations in the United Kingdom. I also taught one-to-one classes for students with a variety of specific learning goals, which ranged from producing personal statements for applying to British universities to responding to emails in a business environment.
