About the lesson
As an experienced tutor, I know that every student is different; each has their own unique needs and learning styles, and I try to reflect this in my tutoring. I like to spend time getting to know my students, finding out what they’re looking for, and what style of tuition works for them. I am happy to organise sessions around clarifying complex material from lectures and readings, but am always keen to emphasise the importance of foundational analytical skills to engaging with this material. Likewise, I am always willing to provide help and guidance with particular assignments: discussing essay questions, proof-reading drafts, and assisting with problem sets; but am equally happy just having a causal chat about philosophy. About Sam
I am graduate philosophy student at the University of St Andrews, and a recent first-class philosophy graduate from the University of Edinburgh. My work has focused primarily on utilising formal methods from the philosophy of language and philosophical logic to solve complex problems across a range of philosophical areas.
I have four years’ experience working as a private writing tutor and editor for university students studying for degrees in philosophy, as well as other social sciences and humanities subjects.
I have been recognised for achievement in the philosophies of mind and language, as well as literature and theology, receiving Edinburgh's James Hutchison Stirling Prize in 2017 and Dods Prize in 2016. I spent the 2018/19 academic year as a visiting student at UC Berkeley, and my work has been published in 'Stance: An International Undergraduate Philosophy Journal'.
When I’m not philosophising, I am an ambitious cook and food fantasiser, and a vociferous consumer of football and related content. Feel free to message me with any inquiries!

Perfect! Sam was a fantastic asset in helping me grip my undergraduate-level logic exercises and provided me with some first class resources to help me on my way!
Perfect! Really quick response which was great because I had a deadline. Helped me with some material I had struggled with and challenged some of the answers I was giving in a positive way. Really glad to have had this session with Sam. He is very knowledgable and analytical. Will be using him again.
Perfect! Sam is an excellent tutor! He is incredibly patient with me and has a good sense of when and what help I need. Sam will never make you feel bad for asking a question or asking to go over something again. He works hard to make sure I get the best out of the subject and my tutoring and is willing to go above and beyond. He is very knowledgeable about logic and would be an excellent tutor for anyone doing logic at undergrad. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
Perfect! awesome tutor, nice guy and really great teaching style - broke down really tricky topics into accessible and easily understandable exercises with helpful and considerate explanation - would definitely recommend.
- Sam's response : Pete was a fantastic student: smart, friendly, thoughtful, and engaged. A pleasure to teach!
