Hello! I’m an enthusiastic, reliable and dedicated teacher with a passion for languages.
I am a bilingual foreigner: born in Italy, lived in South Africa and moved to England in 2012. I am thus a native speaker of Italian and English, with a British/South African accent. I studied French from the age of 10 through to university, so I am a fluent French speaker. In addition to the above, I speak GCSE-level Spanish.
About my lessons:
Lessons with me usually last 60 minutes and we cover all four skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. I set homework and structure the lesson around your needs. I can come to your home in the Brighton & Hove area or if your child is okay with distractions, we can meet in a public library.
I am available weekdays and weekends, afternoons and evenings. Exact times will depend on location, and the length of each session will depend on the age of the student, but a minimum of 60 minutes is recommended.
My methodology is tailored to the individual`s needs. The first step is always for me to ask about the student’s experience, goals, fears and requirements. From there I will tailor a program that suits that specific person, also bearing in mind their age. I can help your child prepare for SATs or just boost their reading and writing confidence!
Send me a message to discuss your needs in detail :)
I have been teaching and tutoring for many years!
I have taught MFL (French, Italian and Spanish) from Year 7 to Year 13 in state schools.
I have tutored children as young as 2, including working with gifted learners and SEN such as dyslexia and autism.
As a private tutor I have worked with many KS1-KS2 children on Literacy, Numeracy and foreign languages. Some of my most recent clients included a Year 6 student whom I prepared for English SATs and the transition to KS3, a GCSE French student with an auditory impairment, a dyslexic adult who needs French for work and family reasons, and four siblings aged 4-10 whose father is Italian.
I have also taught English to children at 3 summer schools and since October 2018 I have been teaching English as a foreign language to adults and teenagers in several independent schools. Teaching really is my life and my passion!
My qualifications: PGCE in English and Modern Foreign Languages, Trinity CertTESOL for teaching English as a foreign language.
Martina has been tutoring our primary school aged son now for approximately 6 months and we cannot praise her enough! Aswell as really improving his maths and comprehension skills , we are also really delighted how she rewards the childrens learning and encourages areas to work on like patience or reviewing their work. She has a great grasp of children's emotions aswell as the learning aspect . I would strongly recommend her to anyone!
We were extremely happy with the choice we made when employing Martina to tutor our son. Our 7 year old was behind his peers and the coronavirus was potentially widening this gap, given the lack of time and resource we had to manage the rest of the family and work commitments. Martina was very thorough in identifying the gaps in his abilities and was able to manage this alongside another child with whom we shared the lessons with. We had constant feedback and updates on his progress and the work was very well structured and thought out. The resources we needed to ready for the week were all laid out at the weekend, so we just needed to sort this out once a week. Additional homework was provided to complete where possible. We would highly recommend Martina to anyone looking for a tutor and would gladly answer any questions anyone may have.

Hi Martina is tutoring my daughter for french GCSE, we have been bowled over with her organised and methodical approach to the lessons. She has a relaxed style and a positive attitude. I would really recommend Martina. Nicky lawrence-Gravestock
Martina hasn't taught me but she is a close friend and I can absolutely vouch for her passion and skill. If I were learning a language I can't think who I would rather have teach me!
Martina is enthusiastic, methodical and communicates very clearly. She has a talent for languages, and we have had many a conversation about how fascinating we find various words, phrases and language systems - I know this is not just a job to her, it's something she genuinely loves.
In the time I've known Martina, she has taught herself at least one additional language fluently (Spanish) and started learning a couple more on top of what she already knew. She never stops pushing herself and wanting to learn more.
Most importantly, Martina is incredibly friendly and understanding. As a person she will go out of her way to help people, and I know that she would be no different in teaching a language.
She has provided extensive tuition in the time I have known her, both privately and in schools, giving her a huge variety of experience which I know will have informed her teaching style.
I know Martina since childhood and I know that she is a passionate (language) teacher, this is why I asked her to help me on a very important project: my thesis. I wrote it in English and she was very patient and attentive in giving me suggestions and good tips about grammar and prosody. Moreover, she speaks my own mother tongue (Italian) so that she could help me advisedly because she knew Italian’s specific problems in learning English. I can’t recommend her enough for her help!
