Experienced tutor offering all levels of Mathematics, Physics & Mandarin Chinese lessons based in Edinburgh

Methodology

I believe I switched courses for similar reasons that many people find Maths and Physics challenging, it often lacks context and a human touch that make other subjects more engaging. I hope to cultivate an interest in the subject matter and satisfaction from problem solving that will enable my pupils to achieve the results they are hoping for. Mandarin can seem similarly daunting subject, but I found that my experience as a foreigner
living in China adds a cultural angle to the subject which is often too language and vocab focussed. I will also tailor the material and focus of the tutoring towards the how the pupil enjoys learning language, be it conversation, literature or listening.

Experience

I was born in Beijing and lived the first 10 years of my life there, speaking both English and Chinese. Chinese language and culture have been a big part of my life and I am keen to help anyone that would like to learn. I originally applied to study Structural Engineering at the University of Edinburgh after a year working at engineering firms. But after a year in engineering I switched courses to Architecture as I found engineering to be more concerned with the function and material of the built environment than the people and their interactions with it. I want to have a tangible impact on people through the spaces and structures that surround us and in particular, not through creating new buildings but rehabilitating and reinventing disused or neglected buildings to give them new life and purpose. I have a lot of passion for Chinese and Mathematics and feel tutoring would be the perfect way to pass it on.

During my final year of school, weekly workshops were run by all Further Maths students for any students in the years below that needed help for their exams. I experienced teaching a range of age groups and abilities, from younger pupils struggling to pass to students aiming for the highest marks to secure their place at university. I found this especially rewarding as it grew my understanding of the different way’s pupils of all ages and proficiencies learn and comprehend the subject and how best to meet their needs as a tutor.

I am also currently teaching a number of people who have approached me wanting to learn Chinese, ages range from 3 years old learning for the first time to final year Chinese Language undergraduates at the University.

I have been tutoring with Edinburgh Tutors for over a year now, helping a variety of ages and abilities work towards their National 4, 5 and Scottish Higher exams, helping coach students in exam technique as well as trying to engage the student with the subject on a deeper level.

WORK EXPERIENCE

At my two positions at Hydrock I worked on a variety of commercial projects ranging from large plots of housing to bespoke work on more specialised homes and public buildings. For the Structures team, calculations and designing foundations in Autocad for projects with over 50 individual plots and working in Masterseries to model and design masonry walls. Often involving dialogue with the architect to revise and redesign. For the Civil engineering team, my role was much more varied, working in a much smaller team on bigger projects meant taking on more responsibility. My time in Civils was dominated by Chard Leisure Centre, a large project spread over multiple sites. Being involved in the project from the start, along with a senior civil engineer, doing site investigations to developing and drawing up a comprehensive foul and storm water drainage strategy. My role required me to be adept at liaising with architects, surveyors, clients and other engineers to communicate our plans and adapt them to theirs.

During my year working at EPSRC I undertook and led a range of projects which enabled me to develop skills outside of my academic ones. I worked in the ‘cluster’ of Engineering, Energy and Manufacturing teams. I was the only employee part of all three teams and gained an understanding of the way’s government funding bodies function, the current landscape of engineering and physical science research in the UK and the structure of academia in the UK and how these interact as an ecosystem. I was expected to provide input and ideas on projects that I was involved in and assist the deployment of these ideas. Large parts of my role involved data interrogation to inform policy and creating graphics and literature for the engineering team to be distributed across the academic community, government and the public.

My time at a South Stoke Structures involved shadowing the head of the company and undertook a house renovation project from start to finish, handling all aspects, from the initial statement of intent to design drawings and calculations to the final invoice of the project. I found having experience in the day to day workings of a smaller engineering firm compared to a large international body like Buro Happold to be very insightful.

Michael helped tutor me in maths and was instrumental in my passing my exams. Michael was always prompt and prepared for our sessions. I would recommend Michael to Superprof because of his enthusiasm about the subject and his ability to explain and clarify areas where I was confused in maths.
