Experienced University Educator offering Politics, International Relations and Study Skills up to Post-Graduate Level

Methodology

I have taught extensively in both in-person and online settings, and fully appreciate the similarities, differences and demands of both.

I have always placed a premium on the quality of my teaching. This involves recognising that more is required than subject matter expertise. Quality teaching is an equal relationship between knowledge, communication skills, and interpersonal rapport.

Experience

I have seven years of experience teaching and mentoring at university level in a wide variety of subjects. These include Research, Methodology and Study Skills, Dissertation Supervision, Politics, International Relations, Strategic Studies, History, Sociology and Philosophy. I have also worked on the University of Aberdeen's 'Access to Degree Studies' program, which involved helping people back into education after a long hiatus.

David's CV

CV: Dr David Walsh

I am an educator and scholar with a wide variety of teaching experience, I am dedicated to providing the highest possible quality of teaching with unimpeachable integrity, and to maximizing the learning outcomes of students. My principal areas of expertise are Politics and International Relations, History, Study Skills, and Entry/Access to Higher Education.

EXPERIENCE

ACADEMIC YEARS 2018-19, 2019-2020
TEACHING FELLOW, UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN
My recent responsibilities included the development and course coordination of an Honours course (on Geopolitical Crises and European security), the supervision of twelve undergraduate dissertations, and a significant quantity of tutoring on a variety of team-taught courses. Additionally, I had considerable responsibility for marking assessments and also taking part in departmental outreach initiatives and organizing novel solutions to teaching in the Covid-19 environment.

ACADEMIC YEARS 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18
TEACHING ASSISTANT, UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN
In this role I taught on a wide variety of courses including (but not limited to): ‘Power and Security’, ‘International Political Economy’, ‘Ideas and Ideologies’ and ‘Global Inequality’. This allowed me to greatly increase my teaching and assessment experience.

ACADEMIC YEARS 2014-15
COORDINATOR, ACCESS PROGRAM, UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN
In this position I was responsible for delivery of the International Relations component of the University’s Access to Degree Studies Program. This gave me the chance to work with a diverse set of students, many of whom were re-entering academia after a considerable hiatus.

EDUCATION

FEBRUARY 2019
PHD IN POLITICS AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS, UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN
My research involved a comprehensive analysis of the condition of nuclear security in Europe. In undertaking this research, I gained experience in qualitative research and historiography, and subject matter expertise of geopolitics, the Cold War and post-Cold War periods. I also developed an innovative theoretical paradigm for the evaluation of nuclear stability at the regional level. I presented this work to acclaim in a professional seminar context.

SEPTEMBER 2014
MSC IN STRATEGIC STUDIES, UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN
Passed with Distinction. My MSc was predominantly concerned with strategic, geopolitical and military affairs, and I was able to achieve a deep understanding of these issues. My dissertation focused on the continued relevance of Machiavelli’s ideas to modern strategy.

JULY 2013
BA (HONS) IN APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE, ROBERT GORDON UNIVERSITY
Passed with First Class Honours. My Undergraduate degree was multi-disciplinary and included Politics, Sociology and Psychology. Additionally, there was a strong focus on Research Methods.

SKILLS
• Exceptional Teaching and Mentoring Skills
• First-Rate Outreach/Client Engagement Skills
• Excellent Course Coordination and Team-Teaching Skills
• Excellent Research and Analytical Skills
• Advanced Subject Knowledge of Geopolitical and Strategic Affairs
• Outstanding Communication and Interpersonal Skills

RELATED COMPETENCIES
In addition to teaching and research, I have taken an active role in student outreach and engagement. This includes staffing open days (physical and virtual) and participating in events such as panel discussions for student and public audiences.

At the beginning of the Covid-19 Crisis, I took an active role in innovating novel methods of delivering teaching, including the creation of a YouTube channel, and hosting of livestreams which allowed students to engage remotely in real-time. Additionally, in my present role, I have gained experience in the administrative logistics of a medium-sized academic department.

David is an amazing tutor who assisted me during my dissertation. His approach was tailored to the subject and he explained the process clearly. I was researching a difficult aspect of history and his assistance was key to my achieving a 2:1.

David was my professor for two years and I have only great things to say about him. He is an amazing professor! You can tell immediately that David is passionate about the subject, as well as helping students learn and do well - always bringing his passion into his teaching. He is extremely knowledgeable, and all his classes were engaging and comprehensive. David became a mentor to me and not only supported me through the final years of my undergraduate degree but thanks to him I solidified my deep interest in the field and decided to pursue my master's degree in a related subject.

The teaching is easy to follow and he manages to explain a wide range of concepts in a clear and concise manner. David is encouraging and supportive to his students, actively tries to foster insightful conversations, and gets you thinking outside of the box! He is invested in his students' learning and has incredible interpersonal skills, making it very easy to get along with him. It was a pleasure to be taught by him during my undergrad and I most value the group discussions we had!

David is an excellent tutor. He is passionate and enthusiastic about geopolitics, and this translates so much into his teaching. It’s really motivating. He is really knowledgable, but also friendly and easy to get along with. He is understanding and is able to explain complicated concepts in easy to digest ways. He is a great listener and very patient too, and this meant I felt very comfortable asking lots of questions. I can’t recommend David enough as a tutor.

I was lucky to have David as my supervisor for my undergraduate dissertation. David communicates his knowledge thoroughly, patiently, and, most of all, passionately, throughout. His guidance helped me reach my academic goals and his positive attitude kept me motivated throughout.
