My lessons are grounded on learning the fundamental elements of being a musician - not simply 'grade hopping', but becoming a well rounded and capable performer. This includes following an appropriate book series in most cases, however I am a firm believer in developing aural skills and expanding knowledge of diverse musical styles. Most of my students will prove their ability by taking ABRSM or Trinity exams, and I am also able to teach the LCM and RSL syllabuses.
I have been teaching privately for 10 years, and work for the Music Service in Birmingham (Services for Education). I have also taught at four other music services, so have a wide breadth of experience with all age groups, abilities and personalities. I studied Piano at the Royal Academy of Music where I received a Master of Arts, specialising in accompaniment, and have also attained a high level in both Violin and Viola.
My rate is £30 / hour pro rata. Most students have lessons of 30 minutes, which is £15. If you'd like a longer lesson that is absolutely fine (and for higher level students an hour is recommended).

I am a relative beginner and Mark is patient and kind and takes the time to make sure I understand before moving on. He’s a great teacher and I can’t recommend him enough. Thanks Mark!
Mark is a colleague of mine from the local music service, however we first met at Cardiff University where we both read Music. Mark is an experienced instrumental teacher and phenomenal performer. He has great rapport with his students and plans intuitive lessons individually designed for each pupil. I highly recommend Mark as a tutor!
I have worked with Mark in String Workshops and on a Bath and North East Somerset Tour to Germany. He has accompanied my students in exams. Mark is an excellent pianist and has a genuine and respectful rapport with students and staff. I highly recommend Mark as a piano teacher.
Mark is a kind and patient teacher and a very talented musician in his own right. His skills extend from piano performance (both solo and accompaninental) to music theory and composition, making him a fantastic choice for all-round musical learning.
