Expert Law Tuition with Luke the Law Tutor - Barrister, LLB, LLM, BPTC, PGCE, MRES, MSET, PhD. (Can.)

We host the best tutors. Quality of their profile, experience in their field. Luke will be happy to arrange your first Law General lesson.

About the lesson

Old Profile. I am fully booked for 2021. I have very limited space for 2022.

I pride myself on the ability to teach the complexities of law in a simple and engaging way. I have done so for over a decade, and I am one of the UK's best reviewed law tutors.

Please do not request help with coursework or essays - with regular tuition you can do them yourself very competently.

All sessions are online via Zoom, for law students it is a minimum of 2 hours per lesson.

Thank You.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Why am I so expensive?

YOUR Education and YOUR results are too important to leave to chance.

I am a full time 'super tutor' that has tutored all over the world and there is one thing all my students have in common - they achieved their goals!

This 100% success rate doesn't come easy. I hold students to account, I am meticulous but most of all I care.

When you are talking about the success of your child, or your own success - there is not a single thing more important in this world. It is imperative that you get the best tutor for the job with a proven track record of success - a person that is vested in your success and lives and breathes it!

In the past, I have tutored within families that have literally moved from one side of the planet to the other with the single aim of getting their child into a particular school; or a student needing to pass an exam or resit to save a whole degree. That is an enormous responsibility requiring a professional and dedicated tutor that is 100% switched on.

When I was teaching, I was happy to work (as so many do) with a few students for £20 or £30 an hour a few evenings a week - maybe to fix some particular areas or some general preparation for examinations - it was easy to balance my work commitments with my tuition commitments. In such situations, if work pressure increased, I would have no choice but to inform the client that I would have to cancel tuition or reduce it.

Now, if you are reading this and thinking 'I would be OK with that - I can take my chances on the reliability and consistency of the tutor' - then there are many good tutors out there at a lower price point.

However, if the prospect of the above fills you with dread and you feel yourself breaking into a light sweat, now imagine this as a cold reality in the months or weeks leading up to a high-stake and life changing examination or test for you or your child - I am sure your reaction would be one of outrage. 'How could this happen?' you would lament, as you desperately scramble around for last-minute tutors in a panic. The truth is this happens at an alarming rate and I would say a good 50% of my long term clients came to me after suffering at the hands of an unreliable or inept tutor.

You are never going to win if a tutor is conflicted between work commitments and paying their mortgage v the £20 - £30 an hour a few times a week for tuition.

In the tutoring world - the old adage "buy cheap - buy twice" is particularly applicable, but unfortunately when it comes to education not only are the stakes too high but it is very rare you get another chance in any event!

With the above in mind, the £100 an hour fee I charge doesn't seem much at all. Come to think of it - if you put yourself in the situation of a last minute cancellation ahead of a high stake test most would pay double or triple for that reliability in desperation.

Therefore, I urge you not to make the mistakes so many have had in the past, as in the last year alone I have had:
- highly successful and respected figures have a break down as their 'reliable' tutor had pulled out weeks before their child's entrance examinations ;
- to break the harsh reality to parents that their only child is nowhere near the mark needed for success a week before an entrance exam after a year of ineffective and haphazard tuition;
- to refuse countless last minute panic requests because a tutor has gone on holiday or is suddenly 'unavailable' and I am fully booked; and
- every single student or parent I have worked with 100% happy on results day. In fact, I was told this year by a very successful investment banker that tuition with me was the best investment he had ever made to which he had also had the best ROI (his son went on to receive an academic scholarship at a top public school).

All in all, I hope this answers the question as to why I am, relative to other tutors - so expensive.

As you can see, the truth is I have to be in order to avoid conflicts of interest and thus be able to give you/your child the unwavering and resolute 100% commitment to success that has produced and is needed to produce such results!

Speaking of which - you only have to look at my glowing testimonials below! Everyone from members of Royal Families, and everyday professionals, to international icons and celebrities, all agree my results speak for themselves!

So get in touch today - I offer considerable discounts for block bookings and long term tuition!

- How much do you charge?

My normal rates are £100 per hour, regardless of how many students I teach during the hour. All travel and resource costs are included in the hourly price. I offer considerable discounts when tuition packages are bought in advance. The optimal time period for a session of tuition is 2 hours (dependent on age and circumstances). I also offer further discounts for online tuition.

- Where do you teach?

I am very flexible when it comes to location. I frequently tutor across most of London, including Kensington, Knighsbridge, Fulham, Barnes, Hammersmith, Croydon, Purley and the City of London. I also regularly tutor across Surrey including Reigate, Richmond, Godalming and Weybridge.

- When are you available?

During the week I am available to tutor from around 3.30 until 9pm. At weekends and holidays I am available from around 9am to 9pm. During busy periods such as common entrance exams and Summer Exams, my availability can be severely limited due to advance bookings.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach across all ages and most levels.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Common Entrance Examinations / 11+ 13+
AS and A Level
Post Graduate

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I prefer to tutor face to face, but I am happy to tutor subjects online. Tuition takes place over Skype via HD Webcam with resources sent in advance of the lesson.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I find that the majority of my students come to me having negative experiences of other tutors. As this area is completely unregulated, my advice is always to stick with qualified teachers. Not only does this offer much more protection from potential risks to you or your child, it also ensures the tutor will have a solid understanding of pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching) and know how to deliver and transfer knowledge and understanding in an appropriate way.

In my experience, while some tutors have excellent academics, they often attempt to replicate their own approach to learning and very often this "one size fits all" approach does not deliver the results or lead to a positive tutoring experience.

To this end, always stick with the professionals. They are often more expensive, but you wouldn't pay an electrician to do your plumbing, so why would you pay anyone but a teacher to teach?

Find out more about Luke

  • 01

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been tutoring for well over a decade. What began as a few evenings a week alongside my degree studies, quickly developed into weekend tutoring while working as a teacher, before becoming a full blown career alongside my Phd in education.

  • 02

Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My background is in law (I am a barrister) and education (I have an MRES in education and currently pursuing a PhD). I specialise in entrance examinations for 7+, 11+ (private and grammar) and 13+. I cover all areas of the law syllabus from A-Level right up to Degree, Masters and Professional Courses such as the Barrister Training Course.

  • 03

Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Of course! We all have role models and all of mine happen to be teachers, too!

  • 04

What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Owning a tuition agency, I have experience of this from both angles. The most important trait by far is the ability to create a bond of trust and respect between the tutor and tutee - but simply, if a student has a great relationship with a tutor then they will work harder and achieve more. This is often far more important than qualifications when teaching younger students, I had more trouble successfully placing university professors with several degrees than recent graduates that were enthusiastic and engaging. Of course, the 'Goldilocks' zone are tutors that tick both boxes - engaging personalities that get the best out of learners coupled with a solid academic pedigree. Alas, these are few and far between!

  • 05

Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

The notion that high stake tests such as the 11-plus are tutor proof is quite literally insane.

  • 06

What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Law in particular changes every day, keeping on top of changes in the case law can be difficult. Thankfully, the legal curriculum as taught at university tends to be slow to adapt.

  • 07

Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am immensely passionate about private tuition - I have seen first-hand the enormously positive impact it has on students. I am also long enough in the tooth to be working with different generations of families I have tutored previously which is quite special.

  • 08

What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

Poor tutors do not last long in this profession, so those that have been around as long as I have tend to be able to cut the mustard. In this industry, results speak for themselves, and I have a 100% success rate with 11+ examinations which is quite special. I am grateful that virtually all of my work over the past 5 years has been solely from word of mouth.
