I am a hard-working, positive, empathetic and resilient graduate in psychology. In February 2019 I commenced postgraduate study in Mental Health Nursing at the University of Southampton. However, the recent disruption to universities has resulted in my rethinking my career. I would like to gain more direct experience of patient care in mental health services as I am passionate about helping and working with service users. I feel that my skills and knowledge would be enhanced by this experience. In turn, I believe my skills will be much better put to use in practice at this current time.
Before commencing my postgraduate degree I worked for 6 months as a health care support worker at Willow ward, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. I cared for patients with very severe learning disabilities. Although at times challenging, I found my role both fulfilling and valuable. I showed high resilience and empathy in this role. Additionally, I surprised myself with my abilities in both verbal and non-verbal communication (including through the use of makaton). I believe that my experience to date and my personal qualities will make a positive contribution.
During the current pandemic I have continued to gain clinical experience through shifts with NHS Professionals. Due to the stress on the NHS at this time I have been working shifts all around the Hampshire area. I have worked in new environments, such as; forensic, CAMHs, PICU, acute inpatients and OPMH services. I adapted well to my new surroundings through my drive and enthusiasm to gain experience and knowledge.
More recently I have spent my spare time completely online courses, for example, a CBT course held by SDS seminars. Not only was this enjoyable and stimulating, I feel I have learned skills that would make me a good fit for this role:
These include: Agenda setting in CBT, Structured Time Management in CBT, Socratic / Guided Discovery in CBT, CBT formulations (5 factor, ABC etc), Identifying key cognitions , Cognitive change methods, Behavioural techniques, Homework in CBT Downward Arrow Technique, Behavioural experiments Continuum Method, Graded Hierarchy/Task Assignments Daily Thought Record, Responsibility Pie Charts, CBT Relapse Prevention Strategies Validated measures eg. BDI etc

July 2018 - February 2019:
I had a full time role as care support worker at Southern Health NHS Trust. I worked on Willow Unit which is an assessment and treatment unit for adults with learning disability. I was given personal responsibility for many aspects of care of the patients and gained much knowledge and experience, especially with regards to the value of the multidisciplinary team. I have learned valuable communications skills, including basic Makaton.
NHS Professionals shifts as above
Child care - I babysit for local families with young children often on the recommendation of another family. I have a very good rapport with children, and their parents find me reliable. I was appointed to a full time childcare role in summer 2017.
My job role was a VIP manager/ supervisor in a popular club in Southampton. In this role I was required to organise my staff to ensure the clients receive the best service In the popular VIP section of the nightclub. Additionally, I had other managerial tasks, such as closing down, counting the tills, inputting sales data To work out the profit for example, and finally, my main duty was artist or celebrity guest liaison. I was the point of contact so my communication skills were key in my success. I have continued part time work in similar roles in clubs and restaurants.
I secured a placement with Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust in a rehabilitation unit. The service users of the unit were supported to become independent again after serious mental health concerns, re-learning simple tasks that most of us do not find challenging. I learned a great deal meeting the service users and witnessing the skills of the staff in supporting them. I learned about safeguarding and its application to vulnerable adults. I assisted the staff, for example supported walks with service users in a local park, interacting with service users.
I was appointed to temporary full time work with Holden & Partners, a financial advice company, where I worked as an office receptionist and administrator. In this role I was required to answer the phone, call clients, contact companies and update client records on the company’s client support systems. Through this job, I improved my communication and IT skills. The experience reinforced my understanding of the importance of client confidentiality.
CFS Events – a medical conference-planning company, where I assisted in preparation for and the running of large medical conferences, providing face to face support to the speakers and participants.
Great Ormond Street Hospital and Royal London Hospital – I worked with play specialists who help children manage the stressful experiences of hospital care.
University College London Hospitals - I undertook administrative and secretarial work, and observed the work of the nurses with preterm babies on the neonatal unit, as well as a doctor in a child development clinic.
I have had regular ad hoc work with a local hairdresser, kitchen and waitressing for large Christmas events at Aldenham Country Park, and with a wedding organiser.
I have volunteered at Penniwels Riding School for the disabled school in Elstree.
